Right, they did post a service bulletin that says all cross border runs are shut down in light of the closure.

So if you wanted to get home I guess you would need to take a cab from the bus station to the border and then cross on foot.

Taxi cabs, Limos and Passenger/Shuttle Vans are considered essential service, if they have a valid work order in hand to pick up those passengers and take them to their respective country on a one-way trip. If a Limo or Passenger Van demonstrates that their service is non-essential such as Chartered Trips for shopping and tourism, they will be denied entry.

Your travel has to be essential... not sure how they define that.

From my observation, work related to the pandemic such as a Canadian Charter Bus Carrier picking up Canadian Citizens at Buffalo Airport and bring them back into Canada on a one-way trip is essential. Health care professional who resides in Niagara Falls, ON and works at a Hospital in Buffalo, NY is essential. A Truck delivering supplies and goods between the 2 countries is essential. The trip has to be work related to the pandemic.

It left but didn't see if it was empty or no. So who knows of it'll make it I guess.

They can only transport essential passengers including American Citizens and Residents of the United States. Otherwise it has to go down empty.

Note:  Many of these schedules are likely to return as previously operated.  Most of them are cancelled due to driver shortages and low ridership (this latest round affected direct service to the Atlantic City casinos).

Regrettably, I can't guesstimate when the services would likely return, since the COVID19 spread is somewhat unpredictable.

The rumour that's going around from Hound employees who have knowledge of this, First has tried to sell Greyhound and the School Bus division to no success. First has now decided to auction Greyhound and the School Bus Division piece by piece. While the reductions are to do with COVID-19, the other reason for the reduction is to start auctioning off some equipment. Terminals that are being closed will also be auctioned off. First is acting fast to dump the North American operations as fast as they can.

In other words when I go back to work it’ll be a different world in that scenario.. great. Maybe to my benefit...

Question, are these "abolished" run schedules PERMANENTLY discontinued, or "furloughed" until a later date?

You're making it sound like the Titanic is sinking.  Sensationalism of a delicate nature like this is how misinformation is spread.

I feel this is temporary, since the government (if not mistaken) has to approve the discontinuance of the routes.

I think the possible discontinuance of routes will at least force franchise runs in the interim.

Can we please make sure "abolishment" is based on facts, instead it looking like it's happening, especially during unprecedented times?

As someone who works in the industry... it feels exactly as if the Titanic is sinking.. and all the lifeboats around it. When you aren’t sure when you’ll be back to your normal run because it’s suspended that’s a bad feeling indeed, that’s my boat right now.

Not sure about the handful of Canadian runs but in the U.S.  those I listed are gone, off the timetables and gone from the computer, if they just furloughed them they would put “cancelled” on their site, which is what they were doing for a while. This is essentially Greyhound “right sizing itself“ for the situation. The actual wording used was “expiring” rather than “discontinued until further notice”. That means these are for sure gone for now. Nobody is gonna step in and run something nobody is riding (there are literally empty buses rolling around). So don’t worry I have made sure I know what I’m talking about first by observing everything and being very careful to get it right and get my ducks in a row before posting.

The U.S. government here has zero say in it, and I have my doubts that they care. Presumably some of these runs will come back as demand returns. In what form? Your guess is as good as mine. Be patient... you’ll see a whole bunch of NEW when they post what’s NEW. But it will almost certainly change post virus. That’s why I went to the trouble of copying that down by hand.  New origin/destination pairs and new numbers are very very likely. Also some of these are being cut related to fat trimming for the sale, especially in the first round last week. It will very likely be months before any semblance of normal returns to the intercity system.

Well, I can speak for a number of the Toronto-New York runs.  Those (during most summer months) are operating at capacity by the time they arrive Syracuse, especially during overnighters.  I don't see too much of a trim there.

The few Buffalo-Cleveland trips I've been on were also heavily traveled.

Change could certainly help on the overall schedules, too, if they make better connection times possible at hub cities.

I would caution you against thinking they are heavily traveled right now. Right, I’m wondering how much longer some of the 4 schedule a day corridors will be 4 schedules a day. We’ll see how it plays out but there may be a third major revision. I don’t want to make it seem all doom and gloom, I think a chance to pull things apart and change them will be helpful as you say and any expansion of service I am more than happy to report as good news.

IF Greyhound manages to find a way to fold, I wonder if member agencies of the National Trailways bus system could step in and start bidding on individual routes.

When Susquehanna and Bieber discontinued their line run services, Fullington stepped in, growing their agency by quite a bit.

My only concerns are the costs associated with intra-agency fare coordination, which I don't see happening.  Megabus as of right now doesn't have through fares between two different line runs.  That could drive up the costs of riding considerably.

On that subject, I'd be SUPER interested in seeing a state like New York (or even Pennsylvania) have a state-operated bus and rail system similar to GO Transit stitching smaller communities together with denser urban areas with inter-city service.  GO, in my opinion, would make an excellent model for agencies to learn from, since they have both bus and rail services.  A state agency would have a better chance of opening up a number of since-abandoned rail corridors with new ones.

They would just use the Federal Transit Administration section 5311(f) funding already available and contract it to a carrier most likely. As for bidding on runs... there is no bidding on runs. You simply do the math and announce you’re going to start a run somewhere, pick a start day and go or not.

Other than a couple medium operators (New York Trailways, Fullington Trailways and Burlington Trailways come to mind) the National Trailways system is mostly tour operators will little interest in line runs.

I was given this link: https://www.bisnow.com/toronto/news/investment/firstgroup-to-sell-off-all-its-north-american-transit-assets-including-greyhound-103388

So First is auctioning their NA operations from Greyhound to First Student to First Transit.

Rumour is Academy is looking into buying pieces of Greyhound, I am assuming the NE corridor from Boston to Miami.

I am not sure if the Trailways Members who are doing lines runs will take over some routes entirely. I would not be surprised if PW and Coach Canada got their wish to take over routes from Greyhound, especially the ones they have been fighting for.

I think they used auction in place of sale for some odd reason. It’s still a sale as of March 12 when that was written. I’m hearing rumblings from several places now that it WILL be parted out and done away with soon however so auction may end up being the right word after all.

Originally, First did the traditional sale, but nobody budged. With debt interest being piled up, First is just cutting their losses.

Right. At this point who would buy anything in travel or hospitality outright? Equipment and stuff sure... people will snap up what’s usable from Greyhound for when things normalize again. The routes are not really something you sell In the US though unless you’re paying First off to pull out of running that corridor or something? But then again you shouldn’t have to give them squat for that (maybe for the facilities and related infrastructure though? A lot of the stations are state and municipal now though so those entities will take In whoever wants it as tenants as long as a deal can be reached to have an agency)..

Government oversight and franchises and all that went away in 1982 with deregulation so Greyhound can abandon the routes at any time and somebody can just pick them up at anytime. Nobody has to pay First to take over a run so if Academy wants to they can run to Miami right now. It’d be a whole lot more lucrative to not have Greyhound running with them as competition though. And if they want to interline Greyhound has a history of trying to grind anyone who interlines and tries to compete with them at the same time into dust.

I would assume the ticketing infrastructure would be sold to the interline carriers in a cooperative style arrangement. Package express as well. That would provide a seemless transition for passengers and avoid a Western Canada situation.

It's truly a shame. Greyhound once one of the largest Inter-city bus company in North America has been reduced to this. Reminds the way Voyageur Colonial/Voyageur INC was years back in Ontario & Quebec, not to forget Gray Coach out Toronto.

Then there was the Trailways Continental with Greyhound saga.

Not sure was worst at running Greyhound

Dial Soap(I think that was one of the companies)

Laidlaw

First Bus

not sure of in the early early 1900's.

And lets not forget Coach Canada/USA.

I just can't understand it? You would think to big companies Like First Bus & Stage Coach would know how to run a inter-city bus company?

Or was it they where tring to run it like they do with there holdings in Europe & Hong Kong? Which simply doesn't work in North America.

I'm not sure what the future holds for Greyhound?

Assumming things get's back close to normal after the COVID-19 issue, what does the future hold for Greyhound.

Assumming certain parts of Greyhound get sold off(routes), what will Greyhound be like?

I can't comment on the US routes, but I can see either Coach Canada buying the Ottawa-Montreal(Express/local),Ottawa-Kingston,Ottawa-Toronto routes doing this will give Coach Canada the Ottawa-Toronto-Montreal triangle which probably one of the most profitable routes.

OR

I can see Orleans Express buying at least the Ottawa-Montreal route(express/Local), this would give them the Ottawa-Quebec City route like Voyageur had in the past. This also would give them a hold in Ontario, which later on possibly expand to other area's in Ontario?

Like I said I'm not sure what will happen and this is just speculation on my part in my thought on the routes mentioned above.

How about New Jersey Transit?   They run state-wide local and interstate buses, trains, light rail, etc.....They operate in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and at one time, Delaware.

What the future holds for intercity bus....who know's?

If there is a demand for such service, someone or more will attempt to fill it. But I doubt we will ever see the likes of Greyhound or Trailways at their peak, ever again.   I can envision some kind of service akin to Uber and Lyft getting  into some sort of demand based mass transportation in the future...

Another possibility, for long thin rural routes, deemed 'essential', might be for package carrier's like USPS, UPS, or FEDEX, to run "combo" vehicles on a scheduled basis, carrying some passenger's....I think I read that somewhere like Switzerland has such a thing....

If there is an interline cooperative formed I think the existing companies can handle it. But they are so much easier to work with than Greyhound that I can see them welcoming in state agencies as well. Greyhound tended to push its weight around to the point that they would do things to spite other carriers without considering the adverse effects on them.
