My friend told me when he started service in August of last year, the passengers reported GWB to be a better Terminal than PABT as there was almost no homeless people walking around GWB. As of last month, the homeless people have turned GWB into PABT. Somebody spread the work about Ourbus lol

We seem to be a homeless clearinghouse… it’s a real issue. Repeat customers too…

Lots of what used to be through runs are now two schedule numbers. I wonder why? Wonder if it will increase OTP,  but seeing that there is a driver shortage, probably not.

Hopefully these transferring passengers aleast get a new bus

I wonder if it has to do with the idea of having reboards and people sitting on the bus for an hour at a station and stuff like that. Or the bus gets cancelled beyond where they are at. Now they have to get off and be inside a station before they can continue no matter what happens to that next bus.

It could also be accounting or connections with other routes.

Interesting.   Lot's of possible reasons, as cited.   One thing for sure,  in todays reduced operations, there is no shortage of trip numbers available for use...unlike large airlines that now have to recycle the same flight number outbound, and then back inbound in opposite directions to their hubs....

Greyhound messed up and didn't post this one in time. But long story short Bowling Green, Kentucky which has a population of 70,000 now has no bus service. Greyhound has discontinued the stop, 2 years after they closed their station and moved out of town to the interstate. It looks like it was fairly busy. They were the only carrier servicing the city. Maybe Miller will pick it up.

I am guessing with Greyhound being separate from Flixbus, Greyhound would be the 'Contractor"

There would be no need to list Greyhound as the contractor since both schedules can be booked on either website. As for the tracker, I am guessing Greyhound and Flixbus Trackers are not compatible, furthermore if Passengers booked on the Flixbus Website, the Station Agent will have to use the Driver app to access the manifest. While the Station Agent will have Greyhound's Manifest on their current systems. Just my hunch, I could be wrong.

There are a lot of FLIX routes that list themselves as the contractor despite not owning any buses. Greyhound and FLIX trackers are not compatible but they are treating this like they would a schedule from Indian Trails or Jefferson Lines. It’s an interlining schedule. There is no access to those manifests by an agent on the TRIPS system unless you are on the version that company specifically uses. So my Greyhound agent in Detroit can print a Greyhound manifest and see where everybody is going no problem. He cannot do the same for my run since I work for a partner carrier and not Greyhound. The key is that the prefix is FLX and not GLI. That automatically makes it not accessible in the system. You CAN however look at numbers… how many get on and off at each stop or how many passengers it’ll have leaving a specific place. Since the TRIPS system has to keep track of seat counts to know whether it can sell a ticket or not they have been linked somehow with the FLIX site. My guess is that the FLIX site is feeding TRIPS information and vice versa. By early next year Greyhound will transition over to the FLIX ticketing system is what I’m hearing now.

There are a lot of things about how Greyhounds system works that don’t make sense. The tracker is one, all the buses across all the companies should be trackable in one place, it would be an investment up front but it would greatly improve the experience since everyone thinks they are on Greyhound the entire time anyways and gets mad that they don’t know how to use the different apps the other companies have or they don’t know that they exist. Then the lack of unified access to everything despite needing the information for missed connections and things in the ticketing system is another. Hopefully FLIX recognizes the deficiencies in the way Greyhound operates but from what I’ve heard about their way of going about changing things I’m not optimistic.

Another round of major service redesign... For one thing the Los Angeles station is no longer a terminal point and now "Glendale Transit Center" is the terminal with a stop at Los Angeles. Only a couple runs still start at Los Angeles proper. They must have a sale of the LA station in the works. Also the New York to LA transcontinental routes have broken into pieces. Lots of Mexico to deep in California runs added and also some cross border service to Vancouver. It was complicated to write it up to say the least.

Also the New York to LA transcontinental routes have broken into pieces.

I don't get that...

About 15 or so years ago, Greyhound did similar...broke former thru trips into shorter connecting segments, but in more recent years, slowly rejoined some of them into thru trips again.

Now this.?‍♂️

LA station was already sold in 2021 and leased back. The sale of the historic fleet coincides with Greyhound moving out since the historic fleet was parked in Los Angeles.

They didn't add any actual Mexico to deep in California runs or cross border service to Vancouver. They just broke up the Los Angeles to Vancouver thru runs (former 1436/1431/1446/1449) at Sacramento and Seattle. They're probably breaking up runs so that they can more easily terminate segments to farm out to contractors. Also if Greyhound gets state subsides, the new routes could make it easier to apply for grants since the states stipulate that funds only go toward the portion of each route in that state.

The new runs from Mexico are the former Los Angeles to Tijuana runs glued onto the former California runs heading north out of LA, apparently to avoid originating any runs from LA. For example the new Tijuana to Fresno is the former Tijuana to Los Angeles grafted onto the former Los Angeles to Fresno.

Another big change is that Jackson, Mississippi now apparently has no intercity bus service at all.

Right they stuck the Mexico to California stuff together going well beyond LA and also made the Vancouver stuff just do Seattle-Vancouver. Then they broke the Transcons into 3 or 4 pieces. It sure looks like a way to get rid of the runs using contractors when the time comes. If you want to go far on that end of the country now you’ll be transferring a lot more coming from the east and a lot less from Mexico. It’s a trade off I suppose.

Random thoughts:

I strongly suspect that whoever owns the LA station is getting Greyhound out entirely here soon. Glendale Transit Center will probably become the LA stop. It doesn’t seem to be that far away really. They’ve certainly set it up to axe LA when the time comes.

Are they hanging on at the LA Maintanance base or is the owner (First still or was it sold?) of that making a move on it too? Considering the historic fleet is leaving I assume it may be closing at some point. The land both buildings are on is probably worth a lot. With FLIX getting none of Greyhounds real estate this was inevitable.  Just waiting for the pink slips to fly and them to shut down Greyhounds physical operations. I gotta imagine that’s the end game for FLIX.

The tea leaves also seem to say that if the terms to do a FLIX style partnership are lousy the interline partners will walk out on Greyhound. It’s very possible they will form their own competing service. Some of the companies are already talking to each other about doing what New York / Adirondack Trailways did and leaving the network to go it alone. Forging connections with the other current carriers they can cover at least 2/3rds if the country if not more. Nobody NEEDS Greyhound to make it work  anymore.

Meanwhile…
Greyhound is in a dispute with the city of Jackson over the condition of the Amtrak station / bus station there. It needs a million or so in upgrades the city doesn’t have money for. They also don’t like all the homeless folks hanging around. That’s a strange stance for Greyhound. They are ubiquitous at the stations. The time to worry about that was decades ago. I suspect their newfound disdain is FLIX influenced. So for now Vicksburg it is… what a sad state of affairs when a state Capitol has no service.

I don’t know what the end game is unless the runs will be farmed out and the west coast is the Guinea pig. If I were a Greyhound driver out there I would be getting nervous.

Any driver for Greyhound should have seen "the handwriting on the wall", for several years now.   Fortunately, any driver with a CDL and a clean driving record will have no trouble finding another job.   I retired from ADT, 5 years ago, and had no problem getting a new job last year.  I had several to choose from, that would have hired me, even at my age.  I ultimately chose one, (Academy Bus), that lets me make my own schedule, and gives me time off whenever I want...great retirement job!

I imagine IT has some former GL drivers??

Los Angeles Terminal operations are already moved to LA Union Station. The old terminal, is for all points and purposes no more. I suspect, the station didn't want to deal with transfer passengers hence Glendale. LA union Station in my opinion is much better than the old terminal, which was for all purposes in a seedy part of the neighborhood

l wonder why they don't just run it to Portland instead. I guess they are still trying to force everyone onto the Boise, ID bus. This is a region, I'm actually hoping Flix just comes in and introduce more point and point service from Spokane. GH completely destroyed their network in the PNW, I'm not even sure if they can recover from it.

If Flix takes over the Spokane runs, that would leave GH with the Sea - Vancouvers, Sacramento - Seattle main lines and the Port Angeles contract left.

Based on the lawsuit JRA had a problem with Greyhound dating back to 2019 it seems

Long transcon trips do unfortunately seem to be broken up into pieces, and I suspect that it will not be the end of that. The sad thing is that even though the trips are broken up, they provide no noticeable benefit for the passengers, except requiring pax to transfer baggage, sometimes in the middle of the night. This is most likely due to the connections/transfers at all points of the network

I don't know how the Flix partner model will work for Greyhound. Some trips are way too long, especially in the middle of the country from any major partner base to be farmed out. More than likely, we'll see a gradual Greyhound service retreat from the plains, west, and midwest, to be replaced by the current interline partners or Flix service

Where is the LA Terminal exactly located? Perhaps the owner wants to tear it to make condo's or apts or some other commercial or residential property?

Used to be located at 1716 East 7th Street in LA. They moved out a couple of weeks ago, and everything goes to LA - Union and Glendale

Interestingly we don't. For that matter I can only think of two people from another coach company out of 51 drivers. I'm not exactly sure why. I did have a Greyhound driver ask me if we were hiring a couple days ago. I know a former Greyhound driver interviewed recently but ultimately didn't get it or turned it down. Most of our people either drove truck, school bus or for the vast majority... they don't have a CDL and we train them to get one. I asked once why we don't tend to get very many folks from other coach companies... something about not wanting to go through the trouble of breaking bad habits. The trouble is that the new folks that aren't used to the hours have a hard time adjusting and so retention is an issue. We had 81 before the pandemic and 49 when everybody was called back from layoff and had to return or leave. We have hired 33 drivers.. sounds good right? We have lost 31 drivers including several experienced ones plus the new folks that burn out or don't make it. 18 months later we have... 51 drivers. Not exactly a great score.
