Congrats to him. Wonder how that will affect system operations going forward.

Drove by West Ox depot earlier and I can confirm that there are about 50-60 WMATA buses from various other depots. They included about a dozen XN40 CNGs (including atleast 2 Metroways units), XDE40s hybrids, DE42LFA hybrids, atleast one DE37LFA hybrid, one Orion 7.503 EPA10 3G BRT hybrid, several D40LFRs, one C40LFR CNG, a few brand new XD40s (for some reason..), and one XD60 artic.

I never really see too much crime on the Virginia side of the system, be it bus or subway.

Alright folks, I made my pick today and I’m officially at Western!  Couldn’t pick Cinder Bed or Four Mile as both were closed out. Blade and Shepherd Park were big “NO’s” for me. The routes I’ll be operating are the 33, 52, 54, E4 and G2.

I definitely will take it slow. I’m on my own now that my class graduated. Next week, I’m reporting in for route training at Western.

You did pretty good!

I don't know Metrobus garage culture inside out... but Western seems like a nice place to land. Always strikes me as a tight-knit crew... an all-hands-on-deck team effort to power some big, high-profile routes out of a small, low-profile facility. Right -- and you'll have "access" to the 52-54 while Northern is closed.

I should know this but I don't: Do you pick a full week's worth of work -- including days off? (i.e. "rostering") Or are you able to pick individual runs on individual days - plus days off - based on what's available? (i.e. cafeteria)

Also... looking forward to your reports on the G2 specifically. I never understand why that's not a bigger route. Metro needs to promote it more and increase service. It connects some very high-demand destinations. Pre-Covid, it did have 10-minute service toward Georgetown in the AM peak. Will be curious to see how that starts to recover...

When you pick, all runs are set for an entire week including days off. For example, let’s say you you pick run “500” which has Friday/Saturday off. You would look in the pick book at which routes run 500 covers during the week and on Sunday, (as you’d be working Sunday in this case). You would also see how much the run pays. Most runs pay 40-50 hours a week, but there are some that pay up to 60 or even above. After picking your division, you call the training instructor and they schedule you for route training on whichever routes your run covers.

In my case, my run has me off Tuesday/Wednesday, so during the week, I cover the E4 and G2, while I cover the 33, 52, and 54 weekends.

As for the G2, I’ve never operated nor ridden the route, so it’s difficult to say. If I had to guess, it uses smaller buses because it probably doesn’t pick up that many people, plus it runs on narrow streets.

I would think that in terms of crime friendly neighborhoods, Western would be a safer depot to work out of seeing it serves more upper class areas like Bethesda and Georgetown. Bladensburg and Sheppard's Parkway depots both have many routes that go through ghettos like  Anacostia, Brookland and FT. Totten. Ideally, Four Mile Run and Cinder Bed are the safest depots, being mostly in VA.

ICYMI: This past Monday, WMATA has removed 72 train operators following lapsed recertifications; since then, service on the Green and Yellow Lines have been (temporarily) reduced from every 15 minutes to every 20 minutes.

Western, Cinder Bed, and FMR are the best in terms of safety. Shep and Annex gets a no, maybe Blade too. Andrews maybe, Montgomery and Landover are chilled.

The City of Alexandria has announced some replacement plans for WMATA's Yellow Line shutdown, which is four months away.

You can't be serious. It's going to be 2019 all over again. Hey here's a question, does anyone know why Metro is having all these new buses come with sealed windows? That idea makes absolutely no sense. We all know that the D.C. area gets severely hot summers and sealing windows on these buses..., I hope their Maintenace never takes a nosedive to a point were A/C units don't work on the buses. NICE bus in NY  has been known to run buses with busted A/C units, but atleast their buses have windows that are openable.

Also last night, I saw a 2016 New Flyer XDE40 hybrid (unknown ##) deadheading to West Ox depot (most likely) on the I66/I495 interchange by the Orang line train.

I think it came from either Montgomery or Landover depots.

Good news: Yesterday, trains on the Green and Yellow Lines are operating with 15-minute frequency following lapsed certifications involving 72 train operators.

Bad news: Five Orange Line stations will be closed for over three months due to the Platform Improvement Project.

I'm not sure if they're going to be any contractors still but we'll likely see this weekend. Also, I didn't see this until now, but the segment between Stadium Armory and Benning Road will be closed on all weekends. So its going to be an interesting this summer.
