2044
I remember reading that the buses offered by S&S were retired buses imported from overseas (somehow distinctly remember Brazil mentioned) and refurbished. Does anyone have a lists of what buses they offered and what the original manufacturer and models were. Aside from the Apollo T-40, I recall a smaller bus called something like Villager or City-something. I also recall the Apollo T-40 was originally a Mercedes bus (O405 possibly?). Another example is the S&S Starship; a Marcopolo Senior (from busexplorer.com) EDIT searching for more S&S buses on busexplorer, I've found out more: S&S did indeed generally import their buses from Brazil. The Apollo is a Mercedes-Benz bus, but the Brazilian O371 model. There is a Villager model, but it's actual manufacturer is unknown. There was the Gemini T-29 and S-29 which was a Ferroni minibus. R. McConnell
There does seem to be a similarity between the Mercedes-Benz O371 and the Stewart & Stevenson Apollo T-40.
HoustonMETROFan
There was the Gemini T-29 and S-29 which was a Ferroni minibus. Good you mentioned this type of bus because as you may have seen in pics (I hope), Houston METRO had those. The suburban version was numbered in the 3800s and the transit version was in the 3900s. My two cents on this thread.
George L.
According to some LADOT Commuter Express drivers that I've talked to, it's very hard to find parts for the Apollo T-40's. In addition to that, they're very heavy polluters... So here are my own Commuter Express Apollo T-40 photos and videos I've taken: Powertrain: Detroit Diesel Series 50 EGR (Formerly Detroit Diesel 6V92TA)/Allison HT-747 LADOT Commuter Express 1992 S & S Apollo T-40 #92044 & #92058 at the Patsaouras Transit Plaza (LA Union Station) in Downtown Los Angeles I'll post some more shots tonight if time allows, and I might even throw in some interior shots

George L.
So why use them? Because Commuter Express doesn't like to retire older buses. We still have Gillig Phantoms from 1985 and 1987 with no intention of retiring them anytime soon.
MiExpress
So why use them? Shaun, could we please stop quoting images? It's not necessary and just makes loading the page longer for most of us. Thanks.

smallspy
There does seem to be a similarity between the Mercedes-Benz O371 and the Stewart & Stevenson Apollo T-40. There's a similarity, sure.....but there are a lot of differences too. Unless I saw photos of original Mercedes spec'd the same as the T-40s, there's no way that I would conclude that the two are the same. Dan
George L.
So here are some more Apollo T-40 exterior shots. My interior shots are stored on my external hard drive and it's in the other room, and I'm too lazy to get it right now They will however will be included in my next Apollo T-40 photo update later tonight or tomorrow afternoon... HoustonMETROFan
Interesting. How long did they last in the Houston METRO fleet? They probably didn't last long but I'll have to look into that for ya. Anyhoo, the specific fleet #s were 3800-3849 (suburban); 3900-3934 (transit). Houston METRO also had what LADOT has right now---the T-40 bus=>2770-2799. According to some LADOT Commuter Express drivers that I've talked to, it's very hard to find parts for the Apollo T-40's. In addition to that, they're very heavy polluters... Yup---that's the buses WE (Houston METRO) used to have. Can you (or anybody else here) confirm that those used to belong to us? We had one that was still around (2792---a marketing bus for METRO) but it's now retired. A New Flyer D30LF bus takes over the job of being a marketing bus. Probably true for the later built D40's, but I do see a strong resemblance with the doors of the earlier built D40's. As for my next Apollo T-40 photo update, I know I said I'd do it today but again I was too lazy I did edit the photos, but I have yet to upload them. I'll probably get to it on Tuesday as I have a busy day tomorrow.

I know I am 7 years late, but I've done research and talked to old timer LA bus drivers. Turns out LADOT only had 3 Ex-Houston T-40's renumbered 91001-91003. The rest were all purchased new in 1992 by LADOT (92039-92058). As for the marketing bus, when did it retire?
