Routes 29 and 79 will be entirely electric, with Proterra buses likely to hit the streets in summer 2017.

There will likely be a main charging station at SEPTA’s southern center at 20th and Johnston streets, as well as a couple others along the routes.

SEPTA Board Approves Purchase of 525 New Hybrid Buses

Cleaner-Burning, Energy Efficient Diesel-Electric Hybrids to Comprise 95 Percent of Total Bus Fleet By End of Five-Year Contract
May 26, 2016
PHILADELPHIA, PA - The SEPTA Board today approved the purchase of 525 diesel-electric hybrid buses - another major step in the Authority's ongoing effort to build one of the cleanest bus fleets in the nation.
The Board approved a $411.8 million, five-year contract with New Flyer of America Inc. for the 40-foot, low-floor buses during its monthly meeting for May. SEPTA also has an option to purchase up to 25 additional buses.
The new vehicles will allow SEPTA to continue the regular retirement and replacement of the oldest vehicles in its fleet with new, energy-efficient hybrids. The buses will be delivered to SEPTA over the course of the five-year contract with New Flyer.
"These bus fleet upgrades are critical to the Authority's ongoing efforts to provide efficient, dependable service for our customers," said SEPTA Board Chairman Pasquale T. Deon. "Thanks to dedicated state funding from Act 89, we can continue to plan for these types of purchases in the short- and long-term."
Pennsylvania Act 89 was passed in November 2013 to provide a stable source of funding for transportation improvements statewide, such as infrastructure repairs and replacement of aging vehicles. With Act 89 in place, SEPTA has recently launched dozens of long-needed capital improvement projects throughout the transit system and across all modes of travel.
More than half of SEPTA's current bus fleet is made up of diesel-electric hybrids. At the conclusion of the new contract with New Flyer, hybrids will comprise approximately 95 percent of the fleet.
"Public transportation has long been the most environmentally friendly way to get around, and it's only getting greener with more hybrid buses on the road," said SEPTA General Manager Jeffrey D. Knueppel. "SEPTA is proud to be an industry leader in providing cleaner, more fuel efficient modes of travel by bringing more hybrids into its fleet."

Wowza!

Seems like just in the last handful of years that SEPTA announced a similar deal with Nova. Has that contract with Nova expired already?

Possibly. This order was complete order, so likely both Nova and New Flyer compete. SEPTA ultimately favor New Flyer (SEPTA had great experience with them since 2000).

SEPTA Announces Regional Rail Service Adjustments

Silverliner V Rail Cars Out of Service for Repair of Structural Defect

July 03, 2016

PHILADELPHIA, PA (July 3, 2016) - SEPTA has identified a defect with its Silverliner V Regional Rail cars that has resulted in these trains being taken out of service for the immediate future. This will impact customers starting Tuesday, July 5, as SEPTA's passenger capacity for weekday travel will be reduced.

All 120 Silverliner Vs, which SEPTA received between 2010 and 2013 and comprise approximately one- third of the Regional Rail fleet, are out of service. There will be no service impact today or on Monday, July 4th, as weekend/holiday schedules are already in place, and can be maintained utilizing the rest of the Regional Rail fleet.

Starting Tuesday, SEPTA is implementing its modified Saturday schedule that was developed for weather emergencies, with added rush hour trips. Rush hour service will be at 30 minute intervals on most lines. Schedule details are being finalized, and will be posted on SEPTA's website, www.septa.org, on Monday afternoon. SEPTA will closely monitor service and continue to explore options to better accommodate passengers while repairs are made to the Silverliner V fleet.

Where possible, SEPTA also encourages Regional Rail riders to use transit modes, including buses, trolleys and subways. Details on services available to-and-from each Regional Rail station is available online atwww.septa.org/stations/rail/stations.shtml. Customers who have purchased Weekly and Monthly TrailPasses can use them for travel on these transit modes. SEPTA is also urging customers who have purchased TrailPasses to hold onto them so they can be turned in for a credit on a future pass purchase. SEPTA is currently developing a plan for providing fare credits.

The Silverliner V structural defect was discovered early Friday morning by SEPTA railroad vehicle maintenance personnel. Follow-up inspections with the fleet showed that there was a problem with cracking in the main suspension systems. Within 24 hours, all Silverliner Vs had been taken out of service.

SEPTA will work with Hyundai Rotem, the rail car manufacturer, to resolve the problems. The suspension systems are still under warranty, and Hyundai Rotem is working cooperatively with SEPTA to locate and expedite the procurement of materials to repair or replace the failed suspension components.

SEPTA will continue to provide updates to its riders and the public throughout this process.

Lease agreements almost signed and ready for:

Amtrak
2x ACS64
5x Amfleets

NJT
1x ALP-44
8x Comet cars

MARC
5x passenger cars

New schedule starts July 11th (Monday):
Trenton Line - removing 12 SL-IV and putting 1x NJT and 1x MARC consist (+300 seats)
Trenton/Cornwells/Levittown platforms are being extended with pavement
Warminster line - additional local service between Center City/Glenside (+1440 seats)
Paoli/Thorndale - 3x quick turns between Bryn Mawr using Amfleet equipment
Lansdale/Doylestown - Additional early AM train(s)

Looking at express bus routes from high traffic stations to Center City
Not done leasing equipment - additional equipment possible from Amtrak and other agencies from across country
DNC likely not to affect railroad scheduling/passenger counts

240 trucks total = 37 have no cracks
480 beams total = 264 have cracks
Repair is not likely possible given magnitude of problem, not entirely ruled out (SEPTA and Rotem both came to this conclusion)
If repair is out of questions, Rotem has already sourced steel for new parts.
Trucks are under warranty

Service disruption will likely last through August, at minimum.

SEPTA's electric buses will have a rear window! Anyone know if all Proterra's have rear window standard?

Every EcoRide and 40-foot Catalyst I've seen so far has a rear window. BTW, that particular bus in the article is just a demo and doesn't have SEPTA's specs.
