andrethebusman
I note most of the rosters have the "generic" Gillig designations of "Phantom" for high floor and "Advantage" for low floor. Since figuring out Gillig "real" model designations is very easy from a VIN, such as "G27D102N4" for a 40-foot lowfloor, and tells what engine it has, why not use them when available? Here is how to decode: VIN is for Cyride (Ames IA) 0819: 15G - Gillig GD27 - G27D (lowfloor, (hifloor is "C"), 40 foot, (30 is A, 35 is B, 29 is E), ISM engine [need to look that up, but these numbers are the engine code! 30 is a hybrid]) Suffix N4 is air brakes, R2 is hydraulic (29-footers only) Anybody have any full serials for theold Spirits handy? Never have seen a proper model on them...
R. McConnell
This is helpful, but when did Gillig start using this code instead of the older "S50T4096" format?
andrethebusman
This is helpful, but when did Gillig start using this code instead of the older "S50T4096" format? Gillig changed model designation style in 1997. However... ALL VIN's since start show the "C09A" etc designations since start, so any Gillig can be translated into current model designation style! MVTArider
A question related to Gillig, should we add a new model page for the Gillig BRTPlus, or continue to list them in the standard BRT model page?
Kevin L
My opinion - Standard BRT model page
RailBus63
It's basically a variation of the regular BRT model, so it should go on the BRT page in my opinion.

That works fine for me, thanks for the input. I was just wondering considering how specific we get on other manufacturers such as New Flyer, Nova, NABI or GM. On the other hand though Orion also has catch all model categories. Of course if Gillig were to use model codes like P30 (30' Phantom), LF29 (Low Floor 29'), BRT40, BRTP40, etc. (vs. G27D102N4 which can mean anything 40' on Low Floor chassis with an ISL) then I'm sure we couldn't keep from sorting them out

Though, it seems that there aren't any Gilligs with hydraulic brakes based on the VINs, even the 29-foot Low Floors/BRTs... Ah okay. Hmm that's odd, I thought most 29' footers would have hydraulic brakes. I'm also trying to figure out some of these engine codes in the VINs. So far most of them are just like the ones found in the models such as 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29, & 30. However, 12=Cummins L10. It seems 08=6V92TA MUI (mechanic unit injection) as I have only found it in older model Phantoms with 6V92TA's (circa 1983-1984 units with full VINs). 09 seems to be 6V92TA DDEC as it is more commonly found. I'm still looking for some other unusual numbers; let me know if you find some.
Benjamin
Engine codes: 08 = Detroit Diesel 6V92TAC 260 hp (discontinued) (C is for California emissions; pre-1984 models) 09 = Detroit Diesel 6V92TA (all types from 1984) ~Ben
