Metro is probably their first major transit agency. They've sold a few to smaller ones like AVTA and Gardena already.

Thanks, I'd forgotten about AVTA (where the BYD factory is) and Gardena!

More XN40s at D1 and D2 means more C40LFs get bumped to D18

5440 has been transferred to D18, when I saw it on rt 127

Rt 265 is now under control of D9, D18 no longer operating this route

XN40s up to the 6040-series is now up and running, mainly on the 460

A number of lower number XN40s like 5635 are being reassigned to STI

Help Save 9495!

Coach 9495 is a one of a kind 65 foot articulated bus that was never built for anyone else except the one that MTA purchased for use on the Orange Line Busway.

There is a chance to prevent the project to cut down 9495 and we need your help immediately!

Now its your chance particularly as an (Transit riding) employee or member of the public to raise the attention, you the busfan can help us keep 9495 intact and running on the Orange Line!

The first phase is that everyone who is interested to see this bus survive is to call MTA Customer Relations with a complaint. The number is 1-800-464-2111 or 213-922-6235 between 8am to 4:15pm. Our out of town friends are particularly asked to participate in this as it’s not just up to us here to make this happen. Everyone has a chance to make their say known and be part of this historical event.

Be sure to indicate if you are a transit employee at another property and indicate how this bus 9495 is considered a transit industry showpiece across the country. This I the bus other cities only dream of having in operation!

What is essential is to simply say that your favorite bus 9495 the 65 foot special bus is not on the 901 line anymore and that you heard that they are going to chop the bus down by five feet. Explain how useful that the additional five feet help you find a seat and makes the ride more comfortable. That you heard they want to use part of a burned up bus to make it shorter and that sounds dangerous. And that the bus should not be changed as so many passengers always seem happy when they ride on it. And many people are always seen taking photos of this unique vehicle. (Not just cut and paste) words to that effect feel free to be creative with staying on target for the basic theme that:

1) The bus is great!
2) The bus cannot be chopped down!
3) We need the extra seats on our bus!
4) The bus needs to be back on the Orange Line immediately!

Also this can be done by email to customerrelations@metro.net or going to metro.net
And select CONTACT on the far right and go down on the right hand to CUSTOMER COMMENT FORM to fill it in. It will ask for a day and just pick any day and time this week. A location is not necessary.

It is key you mention the bus number 9495 and that it has operated on the Orange Line aka Line 901 if you wish to use the route number.

There is no need to mention that you found this here or any names of people involved. We want this to show as a rally of support from people who just happened to have found out about this somehow.
When the public gets involved management will have to react, if a wave of support for this bus is evident to the decision makers who want to look good to the public they can override the group in management who want to cut the bus down for their own reasons.

The stories and claims within management are seen with holes in their accuracy and the initial claim over the permits the bus may require with the added five feet is only a reason that is getting pushed on us to justify what they are doing. It is clear that on their part this is just the excuse to push the bus into this project that has been a pet idea of a project by someone who for whatever reasons has dreamed this thing up. But its not too late!

The managers who want to see this happen are doing so behind the backs of others who have been caught unaware of this. As more people within the agency know that this plan to do this to 9495 is underway the likelihood to stop it before it happens is real. Most people might see the 9495 number as only another 60 footer not knowing that it is the 65 footer.

It is clear that there is no legitimate reason to do this to the bus.

This is a chance to save this bus and change history with a few minutes of your time, if enough people come to the plate on this we can save 9495 and turn this from an (Almost) Die Day in LA type of event to a celebration that we were able to use our skills for our hobby and to preserve something that clearly has an important place to many of us.

Please help and take a few minutes to help us with this struggle to see our favorite bus get a reprieve!

Let's hope someone besides New Flyer submits a bid... nothing against New Flyer but this is shaping up to be a single bid order, which is bad for the tax payer. In the past, NABI was New Flyer's biggest competitor but there is no longer NABI out there dragging down the bid price:

  • Gillig has not been all that interested in such a big contract in the past so not sure if they will submit a bid this time.
  • Nova is unproven CNG player so even if they submit a bit, it may not pass Metro's competency/tech/spec review.
  • Eldorado has had no success bidding against New Flyer.
  • BYD? Are they interested in competing in non-EV transit bus in the US?
The downfall of NABI is disappointing to say the least. NABI was the only competitor that had the production and product portfolio(CNG, BRT models, and Artics) to keep New Flyer in check on all fronts.

Gillig makes CNG buses, but they don't make Artics and won't bid on large orders. Nova waited way too long address the CNG market, which is a MUST in the large California market. New Flyer already has a monopoly on CNG Artics until Nova steps up their game.

El Dorado even lost to gillig on LADOTs last bid, so they have no chance against a behemoth like New Flyer. I don't want a BYD bus.

Looks like for non EVs, Californians are going to be stuck with Gillig and New Flyer for awhile.

I know right. Why did it had to be the NABI to be plagued by instability and disappointment? It should of happened to NFI (New Failure Industries).

Anyway, Gillig may consider making a demo of a Gillig BRT Plus Artic in the near future to see if the experiment will enhance the bus manufacturer's pleas to create one of their own kind and maybe let other bus agencies try it out to see if they admire it or not.

As of this month (May), there haven't been any remaining first generation NABI-LFW buses (7000-7214) in service on some lines that are operated by Divisions 3, 7, 10, and 15. It's possible that they may have been retired or have been converted to OCI training buses.

Not just Division 18, but some of them have been sent to a bus contractor MV transportation to be used on the Dodger Stadium Express, during Dodgers home games. 5434 and 5451 have been seen on the express route.

As of June 5, 2015, all first generation Nabi 40-LFW series 7000-7214 (2000 models) have official been retired. None of them have been in service, since late April to early May (last month). You may wanna put them in the retired list section.

Second XN40 unit (# 5601) is now in service and operated by GC Division 2. What's the status for XN40 units 5627, 5777, 6037, 6038, 6053, 6060, 6058, 6082-6085, 6087-6093, 6095 and so on? These units are in service by now.

Actually 7013 lives on. It was retanked and continues in service. I will post a XN 40 assignment list shortly.

Well, seems like NABI Artic # 9510 is now at division 15, as it is operating on Rapid line 744. This unit has also operated on Rapid line 734, recently. This unit could be a borrowed unit from division 10.

This is the option order of 350 XN40's. They are in production already, 15 so far completed at MN factory and heading to Ontario for final assembly.

Stored buses include those still at the New Flyer factory in St. Cloud MN, and New Flyer assembly plant in Ontario CA. Upon arrival LACMTA Central Maintenance Facility and Division 4 hold all buses not released to operating Divisions.

Roster Notes: All buses delivered in Local Orange colors, all Rapid Red’s repainted at CMF. 6029 First Driver Barrier

Wow, that's a lot of information you posted there. You certainly beem doing your homework for each of the Xcelsior buses.

I don't get why the series won't continue beyond 6149, so that the additional of 350 XN40 buses could end at 6499.

Well, seems like NABI Artic # 9510 is now at division 15, as it is operating on Rapid line 744. This unit has also operated on Rapid line 734, recently. This unit could be a borrowed unit from division 10.

Yes. 9510 is officially now at 15.

They didn't decide to continue above 6149 because it would've have entered the Neoplan numbers and they didn't want to use numbers that have been used so recently. Unlike 3850-4199, those numbers have not been assigned to any vehicles in the past few years.

Finally division 15 gets a 9500 series, since the last one was in the 818 Valley, when it was brand new in late 2007. Probably more 9500 series could be sent to the SF Valley in the next couple of months.

As for the numbering of the upcoming addition 350 XN40 buses. Well, it makes sense to not use the 6300s and 6400s, since the Neoplans have already used those numbers before. No idea why Metro didn't start off the XN40 units in the 2000-2549 series and then the additional of 350 units starting at 2550 to 2899.

I have a question, is it true that LA is ordering 35 40' Gillig BRTs? I saw somewhere that 35 buses will be delivered in 2016. They will be followed by 20 New Flyer XN60s. Possibly replacing the Orion VIs?

Anybody know anything about the BYD buses at Metro? Do they use them anywhere, or just on very specific routes? How is the reliability?

I presume you got this information from Wikipedia. Not sure if these rumors are true or not. Since MV Transportation owns the Orion VI fleet according to CPTDB Wiki, perhaps they are ordering them rather than LACMTA.

Doing a quick search on Metro's website... the last LA Metro contract Gillig bid on was for bus brake parts, which they lost.

Metro doesn't have a history of buying Gillig buses. (Or is it that Gillig doesn't have a history of bidding low enough to win Metro contracts?) But Metro's contractors aren't subject to the same bidding process, so they may have purchased Gillig buses.

Gillig generally does not try to go for large orders by major TAs such as LACMTA, however, that has been changing in recent years. One major order that Gillig has won recently is the joint City of Phoenix/Valley Metro RPTA order for 40-foot diesel and/or CNG buses, a contract that will be in place for five years for at least 200 buses plus options.

I heard Gillig was moving to a different plant further in-land. This could give Gillig the capacity to do larger orders. (If capacity was even a problem. Though I'd imagine production capacity would be a major reason to move)
