Board Admin A. Wong Posted June 3, 2010 Board Admin Report Share Posted June 3, 2010 It has been suggested to me by numerous people that the American section should be split up into more subforums. I tend to agree with this. However, I am not really sure how we can split it up. We could split it up by region (northwest, central, east, south, etc) but it might make more sense to create subforums as demand requires, eg. California, New York. Since I am not too familiar with US geography, suggestions on how to split it would be welcome! Are California and New York good starting points? Philadelphia seems to have a large amount as well. Nabinut
There can be a Eastern, Central, & Western US Subforum. There are a lot of cities in these areas with transit and with fantrips on the rise for summer, it'll be a matter of time before those cities will be featured on this forum

Check this out. Perhaps this may help you on spliting this up into more subforums but you're right---meaning---create "certain" subforums as demand requires. Hopes this helps in any way. Just my two cents. Thanks!
R. McConnell
I like Nabinut's idea -- Eastern, Central and Western for starters. We can always divide these up into additional subforums (for example, California or Northeast) in the future if need be.
JCL
I think one subforum should be labelled "New York City".

ABQ RIDE
So, where would New Mexico fit in - Central or West? Here are my ideas, partly based on U.S. Census Bureau definitions: Northeast - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey Midwest - Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa South Atlantic - Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida South Central - Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana Mountain States - Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico West Coast, Alaska, and Hawaii - Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii U.S. Territories - Puerto Rico, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and United States Virgin Islands So, does anyone like this idea? Orion VIII
There would be some exceptions under that division system. TANK in Kentucky would fall in with Cincinnati-based discussions in the Midwest section, just like Gatineau threads are grouped in the Ottawa section of the Ontario Forum. Looks as if that would work well, and from there we can decide how to further improve the forum. Perhaps Mr. Linksy should have his own section for his historical writeups? I support that concept. Nabinut
I like the suggested format as well. That way small systems don't fall behind because big systems as per my suggestion would be all lumped together
MVTArider
So, where would New Mexico fit in - Central or West?.... So, does anyone like this idea? I like this concept Personally at this point I think one subforum for NYC and one for LA wouldn't be that helpful, yes they have a lot of transit but they also don't seem to overly dominate in the US forum. At the same time just going halvsies or threeses with the US would better define the areas somewhat, but still leave something to be desired. How ABQ has it broken down makes a lot of sense to me. Midwest can have a lot of states since there's not a lot of large transit systems, heck aside from the CTA most of them are chicken feed compared to NJT and MTA sized ones. I would consider splitting the Northeast with one forum for NJ, NY and PA since they are transit heavy states, and another forum for the rest. I also like the idea of giving Mr. Linsky a forum for all the great historical images and information he has. Perhaps call it something like "American Transit - Before 19XX" and it could also be for photos of transit in museums and such*. (*Maybe this would lead to confusion about where to post a photo of a retired bus or traincar though.) Thanks for looking into this!

I'm not sure if there would be much for the "U.S. Territories" forum -- besides Puerto Rico, there isn't that much coverage of transit in the outlying islands and territories. I would support combining Puerto Rico and USVI with "South Central" given their geographical proximity, and Guam and Northern Mariana Islands could be included in the "West Coast" forum. wchu94
There should be three regions: East, Central and West forums. Very simple. Forget about the adding more than three sections because it will be useless with some active topics on lesser known regions and small cumulative amount of post. I agree with the people three or two will be fine.
George L.
I think that for the West Coast, there should be two forums, one for the Pacific Northwest (Oregon and Washington States) and the other for California. The Northwest US Forum should include major TA's in the Northwest (maybe an additional subforum for major transit like KCM and Sound Transit around the Seattle area?) and the California Forum should include, well, every TA in California Ideas for refinement? ieko
I prefer, West, Central, East -- having more forums can be bad because if you get too specialized the amount of topics will be small and the forum will look less active. New Mexico would fall under West.

MiExpress
I would support the concept of having 3 subforums - east, central and west as noted above. I don't think there's a need for more as most US agencies only have one (or in some cases maybe two or three) threads dedicated to them so it wouldn't generate much activity within their own subforums if they did have one. In regards to historical writeups and such, it is a good point. I don't think it should be in the American subforum only, but maybe an entirely new forum on the index page that deals with all transit history threads? Threads such as Mr. Linsky's and the old TTC relics thread just to name a few could be in that particular forum. There are people that might be interested in this stuff but not look through the specific subforums. I think this would be a good idea as it creates a specific place to document and discuss transit of the past and would in my opinion attract and encourage more members. MVTArider
So giving the 3 subforums idea some thought I sketched up a couple ways to divide the US up. Note that these are just ideas, which states go in a certain area can be adjusted accordingly: Also note that I'm not trying to disown any states or parts of states, I have a hard time drawing detailed lines on Google Earth with a touchpad
Chris H
MVTA rider I think the second one is the best categorized, since I would never consider Missouri part of the Northeast.

Yeah in retrospect I should've included Missouri in the southeast, would've made more sense I think the second one is better as well, just wanted to throw another idea out there.
