Kinguni Posted January 3, 2010 Report Posted January 3, 2010 That's got to be one of the more interesting photos that founds way onto this board! Thanks Kinguni! Glad you liked it! He also mentioned they were testing a new power steering system on that bus.
DE40LFR Posted January 3, 2010 Author Report Posted January 3, 2010 That pic is VERY interesting! Thanx for sharing! The test one in Febuary is going to be the same bus?
BusRider Posted January 3, 2010 Report Posted January 3, 2010 The test one in Febuary is going to be the same bus?I hope so!
Kinguni Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 I think maybe a second bus Yes, a second bus.
tovinman Posted January 19, 2010 Report Posted January 19, 2010 it looks like its only a regular D40LFR w/ EPA 2010 engine specs for the rear and 2009 onwards door config... not a new model...that box on the roof isnt part of the bus is it??? must a be a temp casing for the hvac if it is.... It's the heater core, just like on the Invero (but the Invero has covered it up a little better) dont worry its only a test bus so for sure they will streamline the box next year... as for the squared off windows...i think this particular bus was a converted early 09 or earlier bus so it will prob be rounded off as well.. The windows are the frameless Xcelsior configuration. New Flyer has been trying to flog these windows since the very first D40LFr but so far only a couple of transit systems have actually taken them - there are frames on the inside. The bus was specifically built for this test as the weight had to be precise. The bus is in fact an Xcelsior with the D40LFr lower front fascia. New Flyer hasn't yet got approval from Transport Canada for the LED headlights so any road version of this bus will have the LFr headlight arrangement. The prototypes still have LED headlights as they're considered prototypes. Officially, the bus was built in September 2009 but the ISL9 engine wasn't delivered until late November. Vapor doors are standarize one type of door frame now for cost.Wide rear doors are option. The rear door will be optional (wide, narrow, or none) just like any other Flyer LF. The front door won't get any bigger. Some transit systems are having a problem with the "knuckle"joint that allows the front door opening tube to curve up to the top of the curved front door panel. New Flyer has decided to go with a two-piece glass door panel to avoid having the glass pane crack from flexing when the panel is turned to open the door. They earlier decided on the full-height glass without a wide door panel; the door panels themselves are stronger than older door panels so the divider is mostly unnecessary and only provided another blind spot. The Vapor door opening hardware can be used on any size panel door; the rod lengths between knuckles are different. The manner in which the door opens (into the bus) is fixed; which means no flip-out TTC-style rear doors. This isn't an issue, though, as it has been that way on every NFI LF built.
Ber Posted January 19, 2010 Report Posted January 19, 2010 what a revelation!!! I will find it to be extremely disappointed if xcelsiors are stuck w/ LFR front ends cuz transport canada is moving like a snail...and being archaic in their regs (just like the ontario regs that ban multi-color LED signs) the LEDs are one of its main design features that separate the LFR and the Xcelsior... I really don't know why is that hard for TC to approve LEDs when there are already cars that have them. about the vapor door mechanisms in the rear being fixed... ive seen some TAs in the US that have ultra narrow flip outs... is this an american spec or are you referring to the upcoming specs for all buses?

Those flip-out doors you speak of are the same size as the slide glide rear doors on many New Flyer Low Floors (ie. YRT, MT units) other than the XX60LF/R (at least from what I have seen). And no, the flip out door is not an American spec, it is available in Canada just like anything else, except that very few agencies have specified the buses in such a way. The only agency in Canada I can think of that has flip out doors on their New Flyer Low Floors is Medicine Hat, and then again only on their 2000 D40LFs. See this picture for reference.

St. Albert's 1997s have doors like this as well. http://barp.ca/bus/alberta/sat/1997d40lf/0852.jpg You can see that the door lacks the usual hinges at the top and bottom like regular slide glide doors have.
BCT-3122-D800-10240 Posted January 20, 2010 Report Posted January 20, 2010 To add, Saskatoon's 1997 D40LF's also have the single width flip out style rear doors. These single width rear flip out rear doors on D40LF's (And like models) are also a bit narrower than the single width slide glide style rear doors seen on many NFI LF buses. You can see the larger blank gap between the rear door and the passenger window ahead of it as well. The CTA in Chicago also had the narrow width flip out style rear doors on their 58 or so 1995 D40LF's, however they also have a small narrow window between the rear door and the larger passenger window ahead of the door. Here's an image of a Saskatoon 1997 D40LF: http://www.busdrawings.com/Transit/sk/sktn...7d40lf/9706.jpg And here's an image of a CTA 1995 D40LF showing same style of rear door as the above image, but with the small window: http://www.busdrawings.com/Transit/illinoi...5d40lf/5851.jpg There are better images on the web showing the CTA 1995 D40LF's than this one, but this is the best I have on my website. I suppose we should get this topic back to the original discussion.
DE40LFR Posted January 27, 2010 Author Report Posted January 27, 2010 Went to New Flyer Industries the other day, when i stumbled upon a white excelsior. I believe "toviman" was talking about a white Excelsior coming to Winnipeg for a Demonstration for some testing on the New Engine specs. I think its this one, but im not sure. I wasnt able to get to the front of it to see if it had an LFR front or regular Xcelsior front but I managed to snap these shots as the New FLyer people were inspecting it for delivery or unloading. and just on a side note, there were plenty of blank D40LFs there for some reason and it looks like Honolulu will be getting some more DE40LFR's!
MiExpress Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 You know, that could very well be a Brampton, Ontario production unit as if I recall correctly they are supposed to get their Xcelsiors in March or April of this year and they will also have the distinction of getting the first production Xcelsiors.

Hmmm.... maybe. Us here in Winnipeg are supposed to get some sort of Excelsior in February, but it is a possibility!

Nice catch!! In the second picture, it looks like an Xcelsior with its full features to me. There are two ways that one could tell if this was a Brampton unit. Brampton's are supposed to be hybrids IIRC, but unfortunately, the roof shroud, there for style, blocks any view of hybrid equipment. Also, in recent years, BT has ordered buses that feature dual red taillights, instead of orange and red. Any idea what colour the ones on this beast are? And I must say; Xcelsior looks sharp in white, and the new rear end (with window) is starting to grow on me. Again, nice pictures!!

DE40LFR Posted January 31, 2010 Author Report Posted January 31, 2010 Heres another better quality photo i forgot to upload in my earlier post! ;D
R. McConnell Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 I don't know if it's been posted here before, but for what it's worth, Connecticut Transit *may* be ordering a number of 35-foot and 40-foot diesel and hybrid Xcelsiors over the next few years. They may also be getting 20 D35LFRs to replace the CT Transit New Britain fleet of RTSs. (Information is from Wikipedia: not completely sure if it's accurate, but more information never hurts.)
BusRider Posted March 23, 2010 Report Posted March 23, 2010 I figured it would be a good idea to have a New Flyer spottings thread so we could keep track of buses coming and going, to and from the plant.

DE40LFR Posted March 27, 2010 Author Report Posted March 27, 2010 UGH!!! I hate my Camera!! > I was New Flyer today to take some pics and when I press the capture button, The camera says battery low and turns off!!! SO, the best I could do was to pull out my cell phone and put it to the highest resolution... but of course, the higher the resolution, the less zoom you get on a cell phone cam, so I did the best I could do to give you these lousy pics!! In case you cant see (which you probably can't, there are quite a few EXcelsiors lined up for their final "touch-ups" AND they are in the New Brampton 'Zum' (I believe its called) and Mr. Engineer... I can now say... expect your XDE40's real soon!! There were also quite a few WMATA DE40LFA's and Black colored C40LFR's in their more earlier stages of work. ~I SERIOUSLY need a new Camera!
garf Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 Good Idea! Im Planning to go there this Friday and see whats going on over there where is the gate i might check it out sunday
DE40LFR Posted March 27, 2010 Author Report Posted March 27, 2010 where is the gate i might check it out sunday Kernaghan, Between Plessis and Hoka Streets. Its a pretty big building! Dont go on Pandora as Its just the back and you'll see nothing! The Gate where I took my pics are at the East End near Hoka. You'll have good access to take pics as the Manitoba Egg Shipping place beside it are pretty cool with you taking pics Just dont go on New Flyer Property... they're pretty sensitive about it and send someone! The 49 and 90 take you right in front but both dont run there after weekdays! Best bet is to take the 47 to Regent/ Hoka and walk south down Hoka.

Finally!! I can make out 3 ZUM vehicles. They look alright. Im not sure if I agree with the colour scheme that Brampton is going with (see my signature), but I cant wait for these ones. The day is coming!!
