Mystic Posted March 10, 2010 Report Posted March 10, 2010 After over 5 years of designing and implementing the redesign of the MR73 metro cars, the STM has decided to redesign the interior of the MR63 model trains. This will be the 3rd interior that these trains will have experienced over its 45 year career. There have been talks over the past 6 months that a redesign would be possible, but with the plans to replace this model in 5 years, I don't think anybody thought that it would be very useful, or cost effective. But with all of these complications in regards to the bidding process of the new MR08 trains, it doesn't look like we'll see any new metro cars for atleast another 7 or 8 years, and we won't be able to even start counting until they sign the contract and work begins. So what do you think about removing seats and leaving more standing room? Anyhow, here's a photo of the prototypes that will begin to appear on the Green Line (Line 1) starting March 15th. So get your cameras ready, and the prototype hunt is on again! Once the vote is tallied, the STM will begin rolling out the winning design starting in January 2011. I wonder if we'll start seeing MR73's on the Green Line or back on the Yellow Line while they work on these trains?
mat88 Posted March 10, 2010 Report Posted March 10, 2010 It's not a very big change. They juste remove some bench so their is more place. Maybe it will be more confortable.
Mystic Posted March 10, 2010 Author Report Posted March 10, 2010 I just don't like the design... Sorry. I think if they thought that they could get away with it, they would just take out all of the seats and cram us in like cattle. That way they'd have 100% increase in capacity. I wonder if they took into consideration that the more capacity they give to these trains, the heavier they will be?
ProchaineStation Posted March 10, 2010 Report Posted March 10, 2010 Mystic, do you know if they will be changing the roof panels, and walls? or just changing around the seats?
AlexLy Posted March 10, 2010 Report Posted March 10, 2010 Mystic, do you know if they will be changing the roof panels, and walls? or just changing around the seats? I wish they do, if no, they would be ugly...
stm_5307N Posted March 10, 2010 Report Posted March 10, 2010 I vote for more seating then we already have..
Chris_the_traveller Posted March 10, 2010 Report Posted March 10, 2010 I don't like either of them. But if I had to choose, I'd choose A.
Mystic Posted March 10, 2010 Author Report Posted March 10, 2010 Mystic, do you know if they will be changing the roof panels, and walls? or just changing around the seats? By the sound of it, they'll just be ripping out the seats and adding more standee poles. I guess we'll (or one of one of you guys) we'll see next week what the new arrangements will look like. But then again, the MR73 prototypes were never used in the final product, so we'll have to wait and see.
M. David Posted March 10, 2010 Report Posted March 10, 2010 In all honesty, they both look like crap to me. I'd rather they reconfigure the MR-63s to match the MR-73s, which have a pretty good seating configuration.
Mystic Posted March 11, 2010 Author Report Posted March 11, 2010 In all honesty, they both look like crap to me. I'd rather they reconfigure the MR-63s to match the MR-73s, which have a pretty good seating configuration. It would require too many modifications to move the double seats. They would have to find a new place for the fire extinguishers, the emergency door openers and the motors for the doors are all under the double seats, and it would just be like opening a can of worms by moving that equipment. Which explains why they still have the double seats in both A and B.
SMS Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 Obviously space will not be created by removing the operator's AC box...
Mystic Posted March 11, 2010 Author Report Posted March 11, 2010 Obviously space will not be created by removing the operator's AC box... I remember when only the end motor cars had that AC box, and the middle motor car elements didn't have them until they were renovated in the 1990's. They had that extra seat there, and I always wondered how the operator would push open the door since the edge of the seat was in the way of the door. Oh well, just reminiscing. If they remove that side facing seat it would be interesting to see what happens if the emergency brakes were applied. I know that on more than one occasion I've had to hold on to that seat when the "FU" was applied. I sadly can picture a poor old lady go flying into that open space.
SMS Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 so today is the first day of the prototypes. happy hunting everybody and let us know what the unit numbers are if you find them.
Chris_the_traveller Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 Are these prototypes still in service? When was the most recent sighting?
Orion VIII Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 I rode one of them (incidentally my last Metro ride) on May 30th. I was disappointed to find that the "new design" consisted only of removing seats that were already at a premium. Two thumbs down.
Mystic Posted July 1, 2010 Author Report Posted July 1, 2010 I saw them today. I rode them last Sunday while going to meet up with some friends.
emdx Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 They could have shot two birds with one stone by prototyping the Jeumonts…
andreas_kon Posted July 2, 2010 Report Posted July 2, 2010 I boarded prototype A on 06/16 (wed.) during the PM rush.
