I was able to spend some time in the Orlando area last week and while I was there I got some photos. Here are a few of them:

A few years ago Lake County started operating their own transit service. Their fleet now consists of Bluebird Ultra LF 30 ft, Champion on Chevy chassis and EZ Trans? low floor cutaways on International chassis. They now operate four routes and connect to link 44.

Hi! I highly recommend my Picasa gallery http://picasaweb.google.com/Buzz2kb02/Lynx...ndoMiscBusTypes to view some of the last pictures of LYNX's Orion V's ever taken in service. Here attached are a few teasers:

Teal bus P437 is a 30ft. version on now-defunct Link (LYNX speak for route) 5 at the LYNX Central Station in downtown Orlando taken on December 2006.

Green bus P413 is a 40ft. version of a similar vintage as P437 on Link 51, also taken on December 2006.

Purple bus 465 is a 1999/2000 40ft. version on Link 38 taken on November 2008. It is one of the last Orion V's with LYNX.

Bonus:

Another now-departed bus-type with Canadian roots once served with LYNX. The 1997 New Flyer C35LF's used exclusively on the Lymmo circulator service. There were 10 of them: 901-910 and they were sold to CATA in State College PA (a fleet with numerous CNG buses whereas CNG' buses were never a hit in Florida, with PSTA in St. Pete also retiring their 1998 C40LF's Does the plentiful natural gas supply in the State College area comparing to the relative scarcity in Florida (partly due to a long-standing ban on off-shore oil and gas exploration in the state?) play a role in their demise?

By the way, attached as a teaser is bus 910, the last of these buses taken on November 2008.

Their replacement buses will be Gillig BRT 35ft. DE-hybrid buses; which delivery are believed to be imminent (I stand to be corrected though).

Do you miss these Orion V's and C35LF's? Thanks!

In another theme of Florida buses with Canadian connections, I'm showcasing New Flyer buses there in my mini-series. As you may know, New Flyer buses aren't that common in the Southeast outside Metro Atlanta (with MARTA and Cobb Community Transit) and at one time, Florida. And non-artic New Flyers are steadily on their way out during last two to three years.

First in my series are LYNX's ten 1997 C35LF's dedicated to Orlando's downtown circulator service, know as the LYMMO. They served until early 2009 and are the only C35LF's in the state. Later in their life, they are increasingly supplemented by Gillig LF/BRT's, mostly from the under-40ft. 700 series of buses. The service was finally taken over by dedicated 2010 Gillig 35ft. BRT diesel-hybrids numbered in the xx-310 series.

(A primer: This is LYNX's new fleet numbering system in the form of XX-YZZ, and can be broken down in the following:

XX: the unique fleet number of a particular year's new bus delivery.

Y: The length of the bus. the -310 suffix means they are 35ft. buses from a 2010 order.)

As for the buses themselves, they were sold in late-2009 to CATA in State College, Pa. to operate alongside its other CNG buses, mostly New Flyers as well.

Scheduled for approval by the LYNX board is the purchase of up to 4 Nova LFS Artic HEV, with options for more.

See p.43:

http://www.golynx.com/core/file.php?loc=/Solodev/clients/solodev/Enterprise%20Main/Data%20Center/Board%20Reports/_Images/0053743-03-22-2012_LYNX_Board_Agenda_Pkg.pdf

Interestingly this order would be piggybacked on a Minnesota DOT order for artics which I wasn't aware of. I know that MVTA has ordered some 40-footers, but I wonder where these artics (possibly hybrids?) will be going to.

MVTA's units are also coming off a MNdot contract, possibly the same one. I have never been able to find one of these contracts on the MNdot site, but I believe they are just general contracts for X number of model A at X price, or X number of model B at Y price, or some combination. From what I know MNdot has contracts like this with all the major manufacturers. Agencies can either accept the contract prices and specs or RFP themselves.

According to info I got from drivers when the NovaBus artics do arrive they will be placed on the Links 4 and 50 routes. They will also debut on the Link 17 route. Speaking of that I saw one of the NABI Artics on the Link 17 route on Wednesday. Don't know when the new BRT buses will arrive from GILLIG, but until then we have these old buses still in service. These use Cummins M11 engines and have ZF 5HP-590 transmission.

FYI, LYNX's contract with Gillig expires this year. I really hope New Flyer gets the new contract; I would love to see a pink Xcelsior. However, knowing LYNX, I expect they will go with Gillig again.

In 1997 New Flyer won the contract in the state, however Lynx along with SCAT and a few others still bought buses from Gillig. We have two NovaBus LFS Artics on the way. There is a NovaBus LFS Demo sitting on Lynx's property right now. It's up in the air as to who will get this contract. There is three more D60s with Lynx. They were bought in October of last year.

Very cool CJ. Are we talking about a contract for artics? 40 foot? Both?

Right now it's for the artics. The Nova artics are due to arrive very soon. Lynx has an order for 10 new 40 foot Gillig BRT hybrid and diesel buses for 2014, which will be used for the Sunrail expansion. I think more new diesel buses maybe ordered this year from Gillig. We may also get used artics pending what happens later on. Do you guys want me to post a link from the board report? The report confirms the 2014 bus order. The Novas will be historical. They will be the first buses Lynx has ordered with a rear window since 1973.
