The pending arrival of the MPM-10 leaves us the question of what to do with the MR-63 fleet. I have looked at posts in other forums and not much serious thought has been put into what should be done with them: Scrap them (they have lived out their useful lives) Turn them into bus shelters Turn them into food or event booths Donate them to museums (Ottawa and St. Constant are interested in acquiring them) Sell them to some transit agency abroad and hope they can make them run in steel wheel configuration (expensive to ship them) Some transit networks have maintained a heritage fleet of their own for historical purposes, or offered them for charter purposes (some Quebec touring companies have purchased UK's used double decker buses). Quebec's big transit agencies have not adopted this cultural practice, and the habit here is that once a series of vehicles has done its duty, they are all thrown away. Citizens (taxpayers) must realize that even the old MR-63 is still a transportation resource that could potentially save them billions in tax dollars. Montreal's population is rapidly growing and densifying. Our city and province are deeply indebted and may not be able to afford new cars in the near future. The purchase of brand new cars, their constantly inflating price and the procurement mess that happens during such an event can be avoided. Nostalgia aside, serious thought must be given to the possibility of carefully mothballing some of them as a fleet that can be used for network expansion. Different levels of preservation should be considered: The bare minimum is to maintain a single train of 9 cars solely for heritage purposes, with spare parts from scrapped vehicles. Maintain a small active fleet four to six trains in their current configuration (36-54 cars) with a stock of spare parts to create capacity or to accommodate the load from network expansion Strip and mothball enough carshells to create four to eight complete trains (36-72 cars), rebuild them to new specifications or MR-73 configuration when they are needed Mothball a large part of the entire fleet for use and rebuild (difficult and may be impractical to warehouse them) Any thoughts? (I know some will simply fire off a "they're done and are about to turn to dust" argument).
well ok so the MTA's Office employees spoke to the museum staff for me, and he was interested and with my mom's permission, i can join them in saving buses. So i can ask them if i can save Orion V CNG #9899 now!!! <<! So yeah so i will participate in saving Buses.
