  2. I’ve grown up in the Bay Area and nearly every part of it around me has its government run transit company operate Gillig buses except San Francisco’s Muni and the same thing goes for like Sacramento and Monterey but yeah I get the fact that the same transit companies use articulated buses from new flyer but I’m talking 40 foot buses so why is it that most california transit companies operate Gillig?

  6. Sept 8, 2014 The council approved buying four new fixed-route buses last week for just less than $400,000 each. They’ll use the same fuel as the rest of the fleet. The buses can carry twice as many passengers as the 1997 models they’re replacing. They’ll be used on some of the city’s busiest routes where buses are crowded at peak hours, transportation planner Sam Trebilcock said. The new buses are 35 feet, six feet longer than the old models, and with just five more seats but much more standing room, they can carry 87 people instead of 42. It will be a year until they’re ready for service. -- Per the website, SAM operates 12 fixed routes and 4 school tripper routes http://www.siouxfalls.org/sam/fixed-routes.aspx
  7. I live in Orlando, home of Lynx, and have been wondering for quite a while about a certain sound some of our Gilligs make. I have only specifically noticed it from our 2013-2014 35-foot hybrids, which I think are BAE. Others may do it too. You know the normal brief hissing sound of excess air being let out of the system? They do that. But they also make a sound of similar duration that, while similar to the hiss, has more of a tone to it for lack of a better word. It's sort of a high pitched noise that goes up in pitch as it progresses. It happens every so often, with no rhyme or reason. Kind of like the normal air hiss sound. I wish I had a recorded example. Does anyone have any clue what I'm talking about?
  8. Came across this while browsing Reddit: Pic I was immediately able to identify it as an early Advantage from the wheel arches, lack of steps, and low windows. However, it has seen heavy modification beyond the double deck conversion: it has a new front clip which takes some parts from a New Flyer LF and headlights from a Ford Econoline van I've obviously identified to all that this bus is an Advantage, but if I hadn't, could you tell what it was? Especially for those who rarely see Gilligs or have never seen one. I originally thought it was a heavily modified D40LF until I looked at the side. Then I thought it was a Phantom with the windows moved down since I had no idea the Advantage came with these half-octagon wheel arches.
  9. I've been doing a few trips after school to areas where Dumbarton Express runs. The service connects areas such as Palo Alto, Fremont, and Union City via the Dumbarton Bridge. At one point the majority of the fleet consisted of "piggy back ordered" 1992 Flxible Metro "C" 40102-6C Suburbans. Those are all retired, but now the fleet consists entirely of Gillig Phantoms (for now). If you haven't noticed, I've already started a wiki page for this service. http://www.cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php?title=Dumbarton_Express 2002 Gillig Phantom C29D102N4 Suburbans: Ex-SamTrans 2003 Gillig Phantom C20D102N4 Suburbans: Ex-SamTrans 1998 Gillig Phantom C21D102N4 (same as my profile picture): Ex-LADOT, Exx-Hertz 1996 Gillig Phantom 40102TBS50:
  10. Please let me know whether or not these TriMet Gillig Phantom VINs are correct. 11. Would anyone happen to know the exact VIN numbers for the Santa Barbara MTD Gillig Phantoms built in 1981 (units 242-256) and 1984 (units 257-276)? Units 242-256 are 1981 model 35/96T/6V92s while 257-276 are 1984 model 40TB/96/6V92s. ~Ben
  12. According to the September 1985 issue of Bus Ride magazine (most of their September issues were about reviews of the latest buses and thus devoted specifications of them), Gillig had been commissioned by Britain's Leyland Bus (which had wanted to get its product sold in the U.S.) to market and perform final assembly of their popular Olympian double-decker bus for the North American market, but the deal didn't get very far. ~Ben
  13. I note most of the rosters have the "generic" Gillig designations of "Phantom" for high floor and "Advantage" for low floor. Since figuring out Gillig "real" model designations is very easy from a VIN, such as "G27D102N4" for a 40-foot lowfloor, and tells what engine it has, why not use them when available? Here is how to decode: VIN is for Cyride (Ames IA) 0819: 15G - Gillig GD27 - G27D (lowfloor, (hifloor is "C"), 40 foot, (30 is A, 35 is B, 29 is E), ISM engine [need to look that up, but these numbers are the engine code! 30 is a hybrid]) Suffix N4 is air brakes, R2 is hydraulic (29-footers only) Anybody have any full serials for theold Spirits handy? Never have seen a proper model on them...
  14. Were there any Orion I's produced from 1982 to 1986 (when specified with the Detroit Diesel 6V92TA engine and the Allison MT644, HT740 or HT747 transmission) that sounded closer to a Gillig Phantom built in those same years mentioned? They can be of any length (30' for 01.502 or 01.503, 35' for 01.506 or 01.507, and 40' for 01.508 or 01.509). ~Ben
  15. Does anyone have some recent information about Mendocino Transit's (a.k.a. MTA) bus fleet? They bought a couple 1982 Gillig Phantoms when they were brand new, but that is all the CPTDB Wiki has to offer. There are a couple pictures online featuring some of the fleet, which are Gillig Phantoms with roll signs (unknown manufacturing dates), Gillig Advantages, and Ford's. They are located in Ukiah, CA.
  16. Is there anyone out there who tried to use an 8V71N or 8V92TA engine in place of the 6V92TA in a 1981-1986 Gillig Phantom? The reason I'm asking this is because I know there actually were a few MCI MC-9 motorcoaches that used the 6V92TA engine originally and then later an 8V71N or 8V92TA is used as a replacement engine in those same coach(es). But what I want to know is if anyone tried to do the same thing in a Gillig Phantom. And if anyone has done this, I'd like to know whether or not such a wet dream as this has been successful. ~Ben
