  1. MiWay and Mississauga Council have been a bit more transparent about their plans for the increased funding, so I think it won't be accepted grudgingly by the public. Yes, a fare increase sucks, but at least I know I will be getting improved service for it. Now, I just wish they'd release the details of that service change like the Eglinton Express - where, when and what hours? Or an update on the next MiWay5 plan which got stalled by the Pandemic. Is it the size of the coverage area between YRT and MiWay that has service levels what they are for the fare collected between both agencies?
  2. The ongoing strike at York University has forced the TTC to detour the routes that normally serve Pioneer Village Station and are instead being rerouted to the Highway 407 Station with the 35A JANE/935 JANE EXPRESS, 84D SHEPPARD WEST and 108 DRIFTWOOD: Or Finch West with the 106 SENTINEL: Or to Steeles and Petrolia on the 41 KEELE: The 60 STEELES WEST/960 STEELES WEST EXPRESS will serve stops along the street. There's plenty of room to spare at the Highway 407 station, what are the arrangements for TTC serving it? I presume the station is owned by the TTC so it doesn't have to worry about paying for space at the station. I believe they do have a bay or two allocated for subway shuttles when required. I doubt there are many people using the few stops between Steeles and the station and along with the One Fare Program does away with the need for a Zone 3 supplement.
  3. I'm more interested in what Metrolinx is going to name the stations with already existing names: Martin Grove, Kipling, Islington, Royal York and Jane. Renforth and Scarlett will be new names to the system, or have they decided to modify their stance on repeating names and names with a cardinal direction slapped onto it? Martin Grove: Willowridge or Richview/Richview Park Kipling: Kipling/Eglinton (I can't think of one and I'm not sure if the Queen/Spadina and King/Bathurst station names on the Ontario Line are finalized or just placeholders, but Jane & Finch despite the connotation sets the precedent on Line 6/Finch LRT), Princess... (Anne and Margaret have neighbourhoods on either side of Kipling) Islington: Richview (after the high school) Royal York: Westmount, Humber... (Heights/Valley - antonym neighbourhoods on either side of Eglinton) Jane: Eglinton Flats Why wasn't Sloane doubled up with Bermondsey in its name or were they saving it just in case? I figured Bermondsey was likely the more known name because of the waste transfer station. I never saw the need to completely rename Sheppard to Sheppard-Yonge as the complex would likely have been called that similar to the Bloor-Yonge complex with each station keeping its name. If they wanted to rename the station (Princess Royal after the late Diana, Princess of Wales was thrown around at the time), they should have used Lansing which is the historic name for the community at the intersection and is commemorated on the street signs on the surface. Yonge and Eglinton unfortunately doesn't have a name it can use. I'd rather see a hyphenated name for the complex like Eglinton West-Cedarvale with each station keeping its name to save the cost of rebranding.
  4. That purple looks a lot like the "under construction"/provisional colour Metrolinx uses for all of its recent projects. If the Ontario Line gets extended as far as Sheppard it's going to run into the other "purple" route with Line 4.
  5. The CBC article cited above in the headline screenshot (this isn't Facebook, you can still post links to news articles here - here's the article in question) mentioned GO would hopefully be adding train service as any additional bus service would likely get caught in the traffic into the region. The schedule wasn't ready at press time, but it was posted two days later. There is no mention of additional bus service in the Metrolinx release below. Perhaps the distance of the Niagara Falls station from the Falls itself will help spread some of the people around. The eclipse also coincides with the Jays home opener and a Leafs game. I wonder how many people will be travelling from Niagara Falls to catch either of the matches?
  6. Given that the colours for the Ontario Line, Hurontario/Hazel McCallion Line and Hamilton Line were listed as provisional in the Metrolinx wayfinding guide it looks like they've switched up the allocations. In light of the Scarborough RT being decommissioned, will they reassign its colour (and possibly number) to the Ontario Line instead of using one of the two remaining colours: teal/turquoise and light (what I'd call Metrolinx) green? The pink and sea green the TTC had provisionally used for the Sheppard East and Jane LRT lines didn't make the list, perhaps as they were too far down the line? The Eglinton East LRT may wind up taking the empty allocation or one of the provisional ones that didn't make the list. Based on the detour notices for the 7 AIRPORT and 68 TERRY FOX, it seems track work has reached the Kingsbridge Garden/Elia intersection as left turns are currently banned until further notice, though the Metrolinx closure notice says April 22. Is the Matthews Gate work expected to be completed by the posted date of March 25? Have they announced the final layout of the Loop through downtown Mississauga? There's plenty of speculation but few details.
  7. I presume the app and website use the same data that Google and other trip planning apps use. I use the information as a basis and then cross-reference with a live tracking site like Transit55 (would love to see it include the TTC) as the recommended trip sometimes misses an obvious sometimes easier connection. The example I posted didn't mention connecting with the 35 EGLINTON outside Renforth Station to connect to Kipling. I've seen other trips tell me to transfer at Billingham to a TTC route to get to Kipling despite there being a connection between Kipling Terminal and Kipling Station.
  8. Wasn't sure where to post this, so I dug up an old thread that seemed appropriate. Zombie thread? Since the One Fare program was extended to include the TTC, the Triplinx website still hasn't been updated to reflect the streamlined fares. How long before they notice? Also, could the mods possibly change the name of the thread to something with Triplinx in it? Thanks!
  9. The downward spiral of the 21 MILTON GO bus service since it was restructured to feed into the Lakeshore West line which used to run every 20 minutes on weekends, to every 30 minutes to match the train schedule. The transfer and travel time caused ridership to fall which then resulted in the schedule dropping to hourly (which surprised me given they implemented that change at Labour Day). I'd rather be stuck in traffic with 20 or even 30 minute frequencies if it means a single seat ride. With the One Fare program now including the TTC, maybe running into Kipling with the upcoming work on the Gardiner? The 29 GUELPH/MISSISSAUGA connects at Erin Mills Transitway and Square One, but I don't think the schedules are coordinated with the 21 MILTON. With the Lakeshore going to 15 minute service I hope they restore the minimum 30-minute frequency with possibly an alternate 30-minute service to Kipling.
  10. UK-born Canadian actor Chris Gauthier passed away on February 23 after a brief illness at the age of 48. Known for roles in series which were shot in BC like Smallville, Eureka, Supernatural and Once Upon A Time. (BBC, CNN, Variety)
  11. I presume you're talking about the roughed in tunnel for the Queen St. subway? That line was supposed to use streetcars similar to Boston's Green Line or what was originally intended for the SRT before the Province got involved and forced (then) new technology onto the line. The current plans have the Queen St. section of the line running much deeper supposedly to avoid all of the existing underground infrastructure. I don't know if it would have been cheaper to run a shallower line and just relocate the infrastructure, some of which is probably due for replacement. Transfers at both Line 1 stops will involve several flights of escalators. Hopefully there will also be banks of high-speed elevators similar to what Barcelona has with their new subway lines. The depth also allows for TBMs to be used since it won't encroach on any foundations. They would have needed to shut down that stretch of Queen regardless, so a shallow line with the TBM extracted on either side of Osgood and Queen stations should have been pursued. This line seems more of a legacy project the way it was pushed through and how it's being built with a bone or two thrown to consortium members friendly with the PC Party.
  12. It's about 10 minutes from Renforth to Kipling depending on traffic plus the 6 minute walk unless you can line up a transfer to a TTC route on Dundas. Taking the 112 WEST MALL will run about 30 minutes, again depending on traffic and time of day. Rush hour frequencies are comparable between the 35 EGLINTON and 112 WEST MALL. There's also the 109 MEADOWVALE EXPRESS. MiWay is reallocating service onto the 35 EGLINTON after cancelling the 34 CREDIT VALLEY route effective Monday. In other news, a MiWay bus was shot at on Thomas St. west of Tenth Line yesterday (Saturday) afternoon. Police did not find any bullet casings leading them to believe it was a BB gun. I can't find a photo, but from news footage and Transit55 it looks like bus 2205 was involved. There is damage to several windows.
  13. I think posting them here will do as it's easy enough to search and I think it may come up on a Google search. Storing it in a doc means having to find it first. When they were individual .pdf documents you could download, archiving them would have been easier. The wiki here doesn't really have a place to document Service Changes and I know there are others who post the service changes in their respective threads. Transit Toronto posted the changes on their website as well. They haven't always posted all of the changes, but it's a useful backup. They also tend to include comparative maps of the before and after for significant changes which is useful to archive. With the upcoming One Fare program extending to the TTC, how long before MiWay starts seeing an increase in ridership between Kipling and Renforth stations? For the sake of a transfer you get express service. The same goes for the 20 RATHBURN and 76 CITY CENTRE-SUBWAY which effectively run express via the 427 to Burnhamthorpe. The 11 WESTWOOD already has the 927 HWY 27 EXPRESS so I don't think there will be a noticeable bump in ridership. Presumably, northbound MiWay would get the fare with the TTC being compensated by Metrolinx. Southbound MiWay would get the compensation for the transfer. How much does an agency get for these transfers? The full amount or a reduced amount? I've never considered it when making other inter-905 transfers but did know of the subsidy when transferring to/from GO Transit.
  14. I do hope they also switch to a scrolling list of stations instead of cramming as many as they can before displaying the next set. If you're not paying attention to the period at the end of the list and are unfamiliar with the stations, it's a lot of reading if you miss seeing your station. I'd also love to see somewhere in the station a display listing of all the stations (along with the appropriate colour coding) and the departure time for the next train or two along with the platform number. The Bay St. Concourse has line maps, but you still need to know which line your station is on. Something similar too for the bus terminal. If they can coordinate it with the other carriers, it'd help people looking to get to say Niagara Falls or Montreal where you have multiple carriers wanting to take the next one available.
  15. With the upcoming One Fare program set to include Toronto and the TTC, would it make sense to go back to the regional Ride Guide introduced shortly after the GTA Pass? Or should that be something Metrolinx tackles? Each agency handles how to depict service from a neighbouring agency differently. For cross-border trips, especially if you are unfamiliar with the other system it could be daunting trying to piece the two together. I've always thought it would be useful where two systems overlap to have both system maps available. The only place I've seen this is at Kipling Station. Though the different map styles still isn't quite an apples to apples comparison. I did find this map from one of Steve Munro's posts on Regional Fare Structures following the announcement of the date One Fare would be expanded to the TTC. The map is dated March 2022, but there seem to be a few odd routes depicted like and HSR route south on Regional Rd. (formerly Hwy.) 56 and another one looking like it goes to African Lion Safari! MiWay looks like it has its high school specials shown as regular routes. That being said, maybe working on a uniform map design like what is supposed to be rolled out with Metrolinx' wayfinding across the region. It perhaps doesn't need to cover the entire GGH like the one from the Metrolinx report being cited by Steve, but perhaps what can reasonably be covered within the 2-hour window.
  16. Some of these haven't been reported here: Bill Cunningham, Canadian broadcast journalist who covered the Vietnam War and coined "The National" passed away in Toronto at the age of 91 on January 31 according to his recently released obituary. (CBC) Matthew Spezza, younger brother of former Toronto Maple Leaf and Ottawa Senator Jason Spezza died of an accidental overdose at the age of 37 the weekend of February 3, 2024. A statement was made on the HNIC broadcast that weekend. (Sportsnet, Global, CTV) Seiji Ozawa, Japanese conductor who spent time with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Boston Symphony died at his home in Tokyo at the age of 88 on February 6, 2024 of heart failure. (CBC, Globe and Mail, New York Times, Associated Press) Elizabeth "Lisa" Lopez-Galvan, Kansas City radio personality was killed in a shooting following the Kansas City Chiefs' Superbowl parade at the age of 43 on February 14, 2024. (CNN, Associated Press, Kansas City Star) Paul Giordano, father of Toronto Maple Leaf Mark Giordano passed away suddenly at the age of 75 on February 16, 2024. (Sportsnet, Toronto Sun) Ewen MacIntosh, British actor and comedian who played Big Keith Bishop on the UK version of The Office passed away today (February 20, 2024) at the age of 50. Details are still pending. (BBC, CNN, New York Times)
  17. Just posting this for posterity's sake in case it isn't documented elsewhere. I had gone through trying to find some older .pdf links I had posted and it turns out the City had rearranged its website so they're dead. Next planned service change – April 29, 2024. I had noticed along Eglinton Ave. W. that there were notices along the bus stops likely for the cancellation of the 34 CREDIT VALLEY that included the map. I didn't get the chance to actually read the notice itself but it seemed odd to include the 49A McDOWELL on a notice along Eglinton. Is it simply a generic notice place on ALL routes impacted by the route restructuring next week? The routing of the 68 TERRY FOX onto Kingsbridge Garden reminds me of the previous routing of the then 10 MEADOWVALE from the mid-90s which also covered Bancroft. I'm still curious what they have planned for the future Eglinton Express. I presume the resources from the 34 CREDIT VALLEY will be redeployed to the 35 EGLINTON and possibly to the additional weekend service on routes like the 10 BRISTOL-BRITANNIA and 39 BRITANNIA (can they officially drop the -BRITANNIA on the 10 now?). Will it be a 100-series express route or something else like the limited stop 80-series?
  18. There's a difference between trains being halted between stations for an incident at track level (collision, debris on tracks, frozen switch) where passengers are kept on board and one that requires an evacuation of the train, which I believe a fire would constitute as such. I've been on the odd GO train where the bottom level is so full of bikes that some have been hauled up to the middle level on both ends of the train. Battery fires tend to be catastrophic and will likely cause other e-bikes to catch fire in a chain reaction. If the exits are blocked because of the sheer volume of e-bikes on board and egress to adjoining cars is hindered then this is going to turn into a larger issue. I can only imagine what would happen if the hoard of e-bikes coincided with a game or concert and a fire broke out. Your only option may be to jump from the windows on the upper level of a train coach which has hopefully come to an emergency stop.
  19. I get why they'd give the line the number 10, but it does raise the question of whether it's part of the TTC or MiWay. There's enough of a gap from the Toronto projects both under construction and planned or proposed but regionally it will have people wondering. Will the Hamilton LRT get a number as well? As for the purplish-blue colour, I remember seeing that assignment in the Metrolinx wayfinding manual from a while back. Is that another reason why MiWay is phasing out the blue MiExpress livery? They're still shown as blue on the system maps. Speaking of which, I was wondering if I'd ever come across one of the maps in a shelter with the January 2024 version. Most of the ones I've come across still have the September 2023 map. I figured at this point they were just waiting for the February map to kick in to replace them all. I wonder if it's possible to get the old maps since they're not really offered as printed versions anymore.
  20. I'm seeing conflicting reports about funding to get all-day two-way service on the Milton Corridor which was announced earlier today in conjunction with an update on the Hurontario/Hazel McCallion LRT update. inSauga: GO train riders in Mississauga, Milton to get all-day, two-way service Milton Now: Milton is getting close to two-way, all-day GO service The issue seems to stem from funding. Former Federal Transportation Minister Omar Alghabra had pledged funding for the project awaiting partnership with Ontario. Meanwhile Ford is claiming they are waiting for the Feds to come up with equal funding. I'm not sure what the difference between the Federal and Provincial funding levels are, but is it enough to get the ball rolling on this? Further potentially complicating matters is the possibility of Bonnie Crombie running in the recently vacated Milton riding in the upcoming by-election. If she does run there we could see a battle over which party transit platform appeals most to voters in the upcoming Provincial Election in 2026. I'm not sure what will happen with the Federal pledge if there's a change in government with next year's Federal Election. Due to redistricting, Milton will get split into two ridings.
  21. I'm surprised inSauga is the first to report the news about the Downtown Loop being confirmed and extended up to Confederation Pkwy. I was waiting for news about this after the Metrolinx' deadline for the updated business case for the Downtown Loop had passed. The reporter seems pessimistic that the line will open this year. The cynic in me has me thinking the stalls in the various transit projects in the GTA are meant so that Ford can cut the ribbons a few months before the 2026 Provincial Election and that he's hoping to coast on the opening and not the delay for his re-election bid. City Centre light-rail transit loop officially part of the plan for Mississauga once again By Declan Finucane Published February 8, 2024 at 12:03 pm Mississauga will get its downtown light-rail transit loop after all. Speaking today at the Mississauga Board of Trade, Ontario Premier Doug Ford confirmed the “downtown loop” is once again part of plans for the Hurontario Street LRT line, two years ago renamed the Hazel McCallion Line. Eliminated in 2019 from plans for the Mississauga-to-Brampton LRT route in a cost-cutting move by the Ontario government, the loop is now being reinstated into the massive $4.6-billion transit project. For the some 75,000 people expected to in a decade or so be living in highrises around Square One in Mississauga’s City Centre, the loop means they’ll have additional public transit right at their doorstep. In January, the Ontario government directed Metrolinx, the provincial transit agency overseeing the Hazel McCallion Line project, to prepare a business case for both reinstating the transit loop in Mississauga and extending the route north into downtown Brampton. Metrolinx delivered its findings to the province earlier this week and its business case has met with the Ford government’s approval. “Ontario has accepted the initial business case for the expansion of the Hazel McCallion LRT and is moving forward with this important project,” government officials said in a news release today. “The LRT will include a four-kilometre extension of the line into downtown Brampton via Main Street from the Brampton Gateway Terminal and a two-kilometre extension with a loop in Mississauga.” The loop will connect the LRT line on Hurontario Street to Square One with additional stops through to Confederation Parkway in the downtown core of Mississauga, officials continued. “The LRT will provide one of Canada’s quickest-growing cities with faster, more frequent and more reliable transit than the existing bus service, travelling in an exclusive right-of-way with signal priority at intersections,” the news release continued. Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said people “deserve access to reliable transit options that connect them to good-paying jobs and housing.” He added the extension of the Hazel McCallion Line is an essential next step in “our mission to get commuters where they need to go, when they need to be there.” City of Mississauga officials have aggressively pushed the province since 2020 to restore plans for the “downtown loop,” arguing the added access to public transit would be desperately needed by the tens of thousands of people expected to soon be living in the area in addition to the thousands more who work at businesses right around Square One. With the extension into Brampton, the Hazel McCallion Line is a 22-kilometre LRT route along Hurontario Street that’ll whisk riders from Port Credit GO in south Mississauga all the way north into Brampton when it opens later this year or in early 2025. The “downtown loop” will, essentially, shoot off from the main line on Hurontario Street and circle through the many highrise condos and businesses in Mississauga’s downtown core. The loop will add several stops to the Hazel McCallion Line, which currently features 19 stops from south Mississauga to Brampton. Ford also confirmed today his government’s support to enhance GO train service along the Milton line, which includes a number of stops in Mississauga. Long-awaited two-way, all-day service on that key line is now a priority of the province, the premier said.
  22. I was under the impression that it was a stipulation in the City of Toronto Act that needed amendment from Queen's Park that forced the closed door operations. It's been reported on in the past and I've seen it happen first-hand (which got pretty ugly) where someone on a Mississauga-bound bus wanted to get off within Toronto and was refused by the driver who was simply following the law. I don't think a simple bargaining contract stipulation from the ATU would be enough to force closed door operations as you'd have the other union arguing for it unless they reached some sort of compromise. I've seen similar operations with cross-border transit service in New York City where the former Nassau County-operated Long Island Bus ran into Jamaica, Queens to connect with the subway. Drop offs only once crossing into Queens and pick ups only until crossing into Nassau. Obviously where they've been contracted to operate as with the TTC services into York Region or the 52 LAWRENCE WEST into Malton this doesn't apply. And I supposed there isn't any legislation preventing any other cross-border transit service elsewhere in the province.
  23. With the fare integration with the TTC kicking in a month earlier than expected on February 26, coinciding with the next date for Service Changes is there much that MiWay can do at this point? The sign up for drivers has likely already been finalized or nearing finalization. Or will they just wait and see if/how passenger loads redistribute on the routes running through Toronto. Does the fare integration also abolish the legislation that dictate closed door operations once in Toronto (no passenger trips solely within Toronto unless there is no alternative TTC service - see Bloor between Kipling and Islington)? I've always wondered about the ridership of the 30 REXDALE. Was there really demand to go all the way to Islington or was it just a matter of finding a convenient place to turn around. Fare integration should open up options for those using PRESTO along that corridor.
  24. With all of the relatively mild weather and lack of snow have they decided to try and do several intersections all at once? There are Service Updates for Robert Speck, Hillcrest and Queensway in effect for today until further notice. Does the Robert Speck closure impact through traffic on Robert Speck as there isn't a notice for the 10 BRISTOL-BRITANNIA or 76 CITY CENTRE-SUBWAY?
  25. Despite MiWay saying paper maps were available for purchase at CCTT, has anyone ever actually managed to get their hands on one before COVID likely did away with them for good? The Mississauga Transit History page cuts off at 2004. Does anyone have any of the .pdf versions from 2005 onward saved somewhere? The Mississauga Library Archives has a few listed, but they aren't available online and I've tried using the Internet Archive to see if I can dig them up with no luck. I do remember downloading them, but have lost the USB drives. I'll have to check on some old laptops or even a desktop to see if I have them stored there. You'd think with a digital format like .pdf they'd be easier to archive somewhere! The best I can do right now is re-create them based on old City reports and the odd archived route lists I come across. For an agency celebrating its 50 anniversary they seem to be short on the everyday recent history!
