  1. Barlow/Max Bell I'm pretty sure is well above 1%, but unfortunately the resolution of the measurements from Google Earth Pro are pretty crude when it comes to the height. At the east end of the station, it reads 1074m, at the west end it reads 1073m. Since a meter is a pretty large measurement, heightwise, for a 100ish meter long platform, it's quite possible that the station is on a 2% gradient, but it seems steeper than that to me. Jon

Towards the end of March, I was definitely seeing a serious uptick in the number of homeless people riding the trains, and with the lack of any sort of fare checks, the system is definitely being abused. I made mention of this to one of the people managing the building I work in, and she said she doesn't want me riding transit during the Covid-19 thing. Shortly after that (like 3 days into April) I was given a free parking stall in the parkade of the building and told to drive to work. I haven't been on transit since. (admittedly, at the beginning, the commutes into downtown were pretty sweet. These days, I'm definitely noticing an uptick in the amount of traffic...)
  3. The original idea of having the train go to 16th Avenue was so the expensive bit could be done in one shot - that is, a fully bored tunnel from 16th through to the edge of the beltline. If they're having to run it on the surface of Centre Street, to keep it on the cheap, I propose we end it at Eau Claire and use the money from not bridging now and send it further south. It's OBVIOUS the South won the Green Line, don't slap the north with a small itty-bitty useless segment as a consolation. When the City gets more money, build the Green Line north in a really meaningful manner. Pity though. To have the Green Line go from the Beltline to the north end of the city would've saved the city huge in operating dollars from all the buses that run on Centre Street. The ridership on day one on the north end would've made it a massive success. But alas, they couldn't figure out the fact the Aurora Business Park would've been a great location for the LRV garage...
  4. I too have noticed this. Seems like bumps in the road are also a good trigger for those things. Say, anyone heard whether the lawsuit between Calgary and Schneider Electric recovered the 5 million for the failed Connect system?
  5. No. You have one bus breakdown and all of a sudden, you've got thousands of riders in both buses and trains that are blocked. Recall when buses break down on 7th Avenue fouling the C-Train tracks and you've got yourself a situation where _everyone_ is mad. They routed Route 1 and a bunch of other routes off of 7th Avenue precisely to eliminate the potential for ruining the majority of Transit ridership through the core. Plus I don't doubt the fact that bus drivers try to not drive on the tracks for traction reasons. Also, LRT right of way maintenance becomes a massive headache when you have pavement on it. Lastly, costs of doing paved LRT become far more expensive than standard track laying. Hence, you wouldn't even get stage one for the same money that we're possibly getting now.
  6. Possibly to make it easier for operators to be consistent with their driving, regardless of what vehicle they're driving. At least, my guess...
  7. Not anymore. Province halted funding for that so the city shelved the order for the Series 10's. Those 40-ish U2's will have to be kept running a lot longer now...At least another 3 years until funding apparently comes available again. :-<
  8. The transit advocate in me is quite gutted at the moves this recent budget has made towards the Green Line. The political cynic in me almost wants the City to walk away from the deal, patch up the enabling works and finish the ones that have started and basically give the finger to the MLA's who allowed the Green Line to be postponed like this. The federal money is contingent on funding from the province and the City, and won't be paid back until the project is complete. So the City would basically have to temporarily carry the entire burden of the construction costs on the hopes that the funding doesn't get cut, which apparently the province can do with 90 days notice and no cause provided. That right there would be enough for me to say "shelve the project", and then place the blame completely on the province. Let those who are in the deep southeast and the north stew during their commutes and yell at the UCP next time they're at the ballot box. That said, I'm sure there are more than a few people in the city who wouldn't want the Green Line to go forward and they would be smiling at the fact their tax dollars aren't "being wasted" despite the fact this project would be quite a shot in the arm for the city's economy.
  9. I still believe that they should ditch the colours. "This is a Northeast Train, Destination Saddletowne" Or "This is a South Train, Destination Somerset-Bridlewood". We aren't going to end up with a bunch of lines that go all over the place like Edmonton with their even odder names (seriously, who knows where a Capital Line train goes?) such that cardinal directions can't be used effectively. Simplify! Jon If too many people don't know analog clocks, how are we supposed to describe rotations when "clockwise" means nothing? I liked the analog clocks actually. Jon Except if the traps catch a car, then you've got an ugly situation with respect to trapped buses and long detours. Gates on the other hand aren't bad, but are slow to raise and lower. Nah, we just need drivers caught using BRT lanes to give up their vehicles for a week and pay a really nice fine. :-) Jon

  11. I would suspect the Green Line will use the same system as we currently have. Why? Maintenance. Far easier to have one signal system for the city and as we already have staff that are trained for the ABS system, they're already good to go for the Green Line instead of having people be trained on both systems, maintaining two separate sets of inventory of parts, etc. etc. I suspect it would also mean there's a lot of simplification for the LRV's as well since the signalling is for the most part on the outside of the cars. Additionally, I'd imagine Rail Control would be able to swallow the Green Line instead of having a whole bunch of extra systems to control the Red/Blue line and then something else to control the Green Line. Trying to reinvent the wheel for miniscule gains usually leads to a lot of headaches. (Yes, I'm looking at you Edmonton...) Jon

    IIRC, the U2-AC's had a higher top speed than the rest of the fleet. Is that correct? And since it's not coupled to any other equipment not able to handle higher speeds (at least without causing damage to traction motors...), is it able to actually achieve those speeds on straight track? Jon

SUPERTRAIN will be advertising on these TV's starting early April, and from what our rep at Pattison advises, the NW leg is being installed now (having finished downtown and the West leg of the Blue Line), with the South and NE lines being completed by the summer. Any of you guys have ability to do animation? I could use some help and I can certainly provide some goodies in return... Jon

    Sure it can be moved, but will it still have enough juice running the instruments? I'll admit, the instrumentation probably doesn't require near the power required as the traction motors but that's still a lot of electronics. Jon
  17. In a lot of respects, I'm thinking it's going to be a complete gut, teardown and rebuild. Might not be a bad idea either to better integrate the station head into something usable for the Anderson TOD project. But I suspect it's not going to be that bad because of the budget to redo it. After all, look at the demolition of Chinook station and what was left afterwards. :-/ Jon

  19. No kidding. With the removal of the escalators and install of an elevator (probably two needed a la Tuscany), that's going to make for a very ugly climb for many people. It's not too bad for the other stations as the height to clear a C-Train isn't anywhere near as high as the height to clear a CP Freight Train. That's going to be really interesting to see how long the station head will be closed for. Thankfully, like Whitehorn which also saw a complete closure of the station head building, there's other access to the platform. Jon
  20. Yup, and from what I've seen on my rides on the 23 northbound, the "stations" if you can call them that now are not much more than large, tall sidewalks with the yellow raised bump sidewalks. None of them on 52nd and Falconridge have shelters of any sort...At least yet. I suspect the push was to get the concrete in during the non-frozen times of the year, and then come back to build the shelters, install heaters and so forth. I'm somewhat disappointed that these things are still going to be "lite" BRT's. No off-board fare payment, no all-door boarding, and not really any sort of dedicated ROW for this route either. It does however have a good frequency, though time will tell with such a large route whether it will stay that way or not. I for one am looking forward to riding it on a regular basis as the current commute home does lead to a fair bit of variance as to how long it will take for the 23 to show up at Marlborough. Transferring at Rundle and getting home faster will be a bonus. Jon

    Will the Scout ever be outfitted with an on-board generator or battery packs to be able to travel through de-energized sections of track? For example, to inspect new builds (extensions to the two existing lines) and repaired sections prior to being turned on? As well, any guess whether Scout will be able to inspect the future Green Line? (I have my doubts for this - there will be different clearance diagrams for that line, and to the best of my knowledge, would require trucking the car from one line to the other owing to no physical connections...)   24. Saw a 4 car SD160 set at Saddletowne this morning around quarter after 10am this morning. No numbers, I was driving at the time...
  25. Saw 1625 last night headed north onto Edmonton Trail. All the lights on the bus were either solid on or blinking as the case was for the brake lights. After seeing a few motorists being caught unaware by his lane changes without signaling, I phoned it in to 262-1000. The PS guy said he'd talk to Bus Control about it. Do the Vicinities have a "turn on all lights" switch for maintenance to see which ones need to be changed? Or was this an electrical fault likely requiring a changeoff? Jon
