  1. I mean, the buses are not exactly young anymore. And it's not as though it's unheard of for a couple of units to retire a few years ahead of the main batch, for reasons of frame corrosion, blown out engines, accident damage, or other ailments which would cost entirely too much to fix up. In the age of the Orion Vs, 7090 retired almost 3 full years early, a year and a half ahead of the start of the systematic retirements.

The 8100s will certainly not start retiring en masse while the OG diesels and hybrids of all flavours continue to troll the streets.

  2. I had to send my camera off for servicing, as it encountered a strange intermittent problem with the LCD screen, including live view and video shooting, not working.

I don't have any trips planned in the near future so it wasn't an inconvenience in that sense but it nevertheless feels like something important is missing. They received the camera on Monday and they said that there's supposed to be an update within 48 hours as to whether it's serviceable or not, but it's been obviously a lot longer than that already and still nothing.

  3. Not sure if this is a good thread for this, but I figured it would be a waste to create a new thread for it.

Has any thought been given to expanding the functionality of the ignore feature? Under its current form I would say I find it to not go nearly far enough - if there is a post in the middle of a thread from someone you ignored, the whole flow of the thread is disrupted so it can display "You've chosen to ignore content by XYZ", and their posts show up (though the text of the post can't be seen) if you go to your discover stream. My personal preference from other websites that I've used would be to not be reminded of these people at all unless you've specifically enabled so in your settings.

  4. It takes some balls to discount a shelving unit from $344 to $50, or a refrigerator from $4400 to $1200, and then turn around and say that there are no hours due to profits being down.

The only requirement to be in charge of anything at a corporation is to have a pulse.

nor do I see why they couldn't evacuate to track level, since even subway evacuation in the tunnel would also take place on track level (that's what the TR emergency ramp is for), despite subway tracks being an even more restricted space than railway tracks.

On the subway, there aren't many places in the tunnel where evacuating from the side would occur. I think the Sheppard line may have a few sections where there is a wide walkway to the side of the train, but don't quote me on that.

Thus, most subway trains that would be evacuated would be evacuated from one cab end or the other, and there will be an employee that will tell people where they can go (that is, until capitalism's death cult removes employees from all trains). As well, many, though certainly not all, tunnels are somewhat segregated from the opposite direction tunnel.

No such luck in the case of GO; someone leaping out of a burning BiLevel will find themselves on a 2, 3, 4 track line, there is no employee to tell them where it is safe for them to go unless the fire conveniently happens in the accessibility coach, a train going in the other direction might hit them, and there tends to be quite a bit of clutter, from what I've noticed, by the lineside (extra rails, sleepers, etc) that people could trip over. Imagine someone leaping from a BiLevel right down this overgrown embankment:

Trains at 10 or 15 minute frequencies during peak periods isn't all that bad if that's all it is. It's different story around the elevated Ontario line however. It might have been 20 trains per hour with improved GO service but because the god of elevated mini-metros decided he needed to touch Toronto again, those poor saps in the area will be stuck with 100 trains per hour. They have a real beef with the parasites at Metrolinx.

I disagree. To me, the actual number of trains is irrelevant (what if it was a line that was served by only one freight train at 1 am? That would cause more disruption than 100 freight trains in the daytime if you are a light sleeper).

If one moves to the biggest city in the country, and buys a house by a railway line, and then cries foul about trains using that line, they might be an idiot of biblical scale. If they want peace and quiet, there's plenty of tiny villages up north that may be more their speed - and there's plenty of leafy, tree-lined streets lined with single family homes all over the city, too.

Moving on, can anyone tell me what kind of black magic trickery is going on here? I was on GO bus 2580 today and noticed that the back up camera, when not in back up mode, shows an overhead view of the bus.

What is the technology at play here? At first I thought it might have been a simulator to show the floor plan of various bus terminals, but when we passed in between two GO buses at Yorkdale that were both shown on there, as well as the supervisor car that was parked in front of one of them, I thought, maybe not. Then I thought it might have been some funky satellite technology that zeroes in on individual buses - I have no idea if such a thing is feasible, but I don't know satellite tech at all, but you could see above the bus even under roofs, so that seems unlikely too. What is going on? There is not much at this stage of my life, transit or otherwise, that absolutely mystifies me, but this absolutely does. I feel like a rural peasant from the 1600s if they saw electricity lol

I don't think it's fair to crap on the homeowners as much as people do. For decades only a few trains a day ran and mostly at rush hour. Then it went to 10 min service and they're not allowed to fell any sort of way?

    No.

Including the life of that distressed woman last year. Despite pleas from an employee to stop a train, control authorized it to proceed and ran over the woman sitting on the track.

Do you have a link to this story?

There is a lot about this that doesn't make sense. Metrolinx can't force an employee to engage in vehicular manslaughter. And if they did, that would make me wonder some things about the employee who complied...

Nor do Special Constables actually slam people against the wall for fare evasion. It’s against their use of force policy. That would be a hot take in the media otherwise

I agree with your entire post except for this. I have no sympathy for snotty teenagers who think they are too good to pay for transit, but positions like this attract many who relish the authority they get to lord over the rest of us plebs. They are overpaid thugs with a monopoly on legitimate violence. There is no peach in this race.

  10. A thought: is there any particular reason why the remaining NG hybrids have not been consolidated at Malvern? I have no particular wish to see this, but in this era of standardization being king, I would think maintaining parts inventories for these buses at 3 separate garages would be a hassle, particularly Arrow, Mount Dennis at least having some commonality with the OG hybrids. Is it a reliability concern? Or am I totally off base with my premise here?

Colour me astounded that the hybrids have been in service for 18 years now, considering how many problems beset them.

  11. Went into Toronto today to photograph a specific bus with a livery modification.

Turns out I have had a picture of that bus, with said livery modification, since October.

I need to find a new way of tracking what vehicles I have photographed in a given month. Before I shot with a DSLR I used to be able to search for the vehicle number in my Flickr albums, but I'm 2 years behind on editing my RAW photos so uploading to Flickr is a very irregular occurrence.

I heard that 7423 was finally scrapped.

A little unrelated but 7423 was built in July 2003 and entered service on 2003/12/08 making it just over 20 years old. Oldest TTC OG that was still lingering around. Surprised it stuck around so long after being decommissioned and donated.

Do you know what day the very first VII entered service? I believe there was a public presentation of 7400 in January 2003 or thereabouts, but I've never seen an exact date given for the first day of operations.
