  9. This thread is for discussion in regards to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro including our Canadian participation. CANADA: - Canada defeated Brazil in both rugby matches. - In Women's soccer, Canada scored a 2-0 win over Australia and 3-1 over Zimbabwe. OTHER: - The United States defeated the People's Republic of China 119-62 in men's basketball. The Americans lead in the medal standings. NOTES: - In spite of the doping scandal, Russia sent 271 athletes since the track and field team is banned from the Olympics. - South Sudan and Kosovo made their Olympic debuts. South Sudan gained independence in 2011 while Kosovo granted independence in 2008, which however, is recognized by 109 UN members including Canada. - in a bizarre twist, Taiwan aka Republic of China competes as Chinese Taipei since 1984. The original China debuted in the 1932 Olympics. But due to the One-China policy, in which the PRC recognizes as the sole legitimate government of "China", ROC was forced to use the Chinese Taipei name. So guys, post away and show some pride! ============================= MEDAL STANDINGS (Updated as of August 10, 2016) United States - (10 G, 9 S, 9 B = 28 overall) People's Republic of China - (9 G, 3 S, 7 B = 19 overall) South Korea - (4 G, 2 S, 2 B = 8 overall) Japan - (4 G, 1 S, 10 B = 15 overall) Hungary - (4 G, 1 S, 1 B = 6 overall) Australia - (4 G, 0 S, 5 B = 9 overall) Russian Federation - (3 G, 7 S, 3 B = 13 overall) Italy - (3 G, 5 S, 2 B = 10 overall) United Kingdom/Great Britain (3 G, 3 S, 5 B = 11 overall) France - (2 G, 3 S, 1 B = 6 overall) Thailand - (2 G, 1 S, 1 B = 4 overall) Germany - (1 G, 2 S, 1 B = 4 overall) Sweden - (1 G, 2 S, 0 B = 3 overall) Netherlands - (1 G, 1 S, 2 B = 4 overall) Brazil - (1 G, 1 S, 0 B = 2 overall) Colombia - (1 G, 1 S, 0 B = 2 overall) Slovenia - (1 G, 1 S, 0 B = 2 overall) Vietnam - (1 G, 1 S, 0 B = 2 overall) Chinese Taipei (ROC) - (1 G, 0 S, 2 B = 3 overall) Belgium - (1 G, 0 S, 1 B = 2 overall) Greece - (1 G, 0 S 1 B = 2 overall) Switzerland - (1 G, 0 S, 1 B = 1 overall) Argentina - (1 G, 0 S, 0 B = 1 overall) Croatia - (1 G, 0 S, 0 B = 1 overall) Kuwait/IOA - (1 G, 0 S, 0 B = 1 overall) Kosovo - (1 G, 0 S, 0 B = 1 overall) Kazakhstan - (0 G, 2 S, 3 B = 5 overall) North Korea - (0 G, 2 S, 1 B = 3 overall) Indonesia - (0 G, 2 S, 0 B = 2 overall) New Zealand - (0 G, 2 S, 0 B = 2 overall) South Africa - (0 G, 2 S, 0 B = 2 overall) CANADA - (0 G, 1 S, 4 B = 5 overall) Ukraine - (0 G, 1 S, 1 B = 2 overall) Azerbaijan - (0 G, 1 S, 0 B = 0 overall) Denmark - (0 G, 1 S, 0 B = 1 overall) Malaysia - (0 G, 1 S, 0 B = 1 overall) Mongolia - (0 G, 1 S, 0 B = 1 overall) Philippines - (0 G, 1 S, 0 B = 1 overall) Slovakia - (0 G, 1 S, 0 B = 1 overall) Turkey - (0 G, 1 S, 0 B = 1 overall) Uzbekistan - (0 G, 0 S, 2 B = 2 overall) Czech Republic - (0 G, 0 S, 1 B = 1 overall) Egypt - (0 G, 0 S, 1 B = 1 overall) Spain - (0 G, 0 S, 1 B = 1 overall) Georgia - (0 G, 0 S, 1 B = 1 overall) Israel - (0 G, 0 S, 1 B = 1 overall) Kyrgyzstan - (0 G, 0 S, 1 B = 1 overall) Poland - (0 G, 0 S, 1 B = 1 overall) Portugal - (0 G, 0 S, 1 B = 1 overall) United Arab Emirates - (0 G, 0 S, 1 B = 1 overall)
