Toronto Transit Commission 5670-5807 are Hawker Siddeley Canada H5 subway cars built from 1976 to 1979. The cars primarily serve the Yonge-University-Spadina line, and are based out of Wilson and Davisville yards. Although they are not regularly scheduled to operate on the Bloor-Danforth line, occasionally spare trains of H5 cars will make it onto that line.

As the cars aged, they began to experience numerous issues with their control systems, truck and axle problems, and serious frame rusting, particularly at the doorways. The TTC decided to overhaul the H5 subway cars beginning in the summer of 1997. Six subway cars would be overhauled at one time. This overhaul program was completed in 1999. The most noticeable change was the replacement of the padded vinyl seat inserts to the now standard unpadded, red synthetic inserts. As delivered, the cars had orange and brown vinyl inserts, however many cars featured all orange or all brown throughout by the time they were overhauled. Most H5 cars have had the centre standee pole at the B-end (non-cab end) removed. Additionally, some cars have had all their centre standee poles removed (5784-87, 5799 among others).

Car 5796 was modified by UTDC between July and December 1990 as a mock-up/prototype for the T1 subway cars. The interior was redone with a red and grey colour scheme. Seats were arranged in a perimeter layout and door partitions positioned to the dimensions of the T1 doors. The seating arrangement was later revised to that used on the T1 cars. The door interiors were also initially painted grey instead of red.

Some fleet numbers from this retired series were reused for the new Bombardier Toronto Rocket subway cars expected to be delivered later in 2011. In 2009, the TTC Staff was approached by a company interested in negotiating a potential purchase of the H5 and H6 cars. The company intends to reuse the cars for a transit system "in another jurisdiction".[1] The parties involved remained undisclosed until May 2011 when media outlets reported on a visit of Nigerian officials to the TTC to inspect the system and future surplus H5 and H6 cars. These cars would be used on Lagos' light rail system which is under construction,[2]. The first of the H5 cars reportedly left Toronto for the United States at the end of September 2011. They will be refurbished in the US by EKO Rail prior to being shipped to Nigeria.[3]

As of 2012, a good number of early H5 cars had been trucked off to Future Enterprises in Hamilton ON for scrapping. More recent retirements had been trucked into the USA, heading for Buffalo, New York, where they were being stored before refurbishment for EKO Rail. The refurbishing project was later cut down to only H5 units with all the H6 cars (still operating for the TTC) being earmarked for scrap. In total, about 76 H5 cars were sent stateside for refurbishing. Eventually the H5 refurbishing arrangement fell through, as Nigeria decided to purchase new rolling stock from China for its Lagos project. Four H5 cars had been sent to Hornell NY for refurbishing and were scrapped on site, the rest were cut up by a scrapper at a Port of Buffalo warehouse on behalf of EKO Rail, by the end of August 2015.

The final TTC H5 train made its last run on June 14th 2013, involving cars (Finch end) 5791-5790-5779-5778-5789-5788 (Downsview end) making an afternoon trip from Downsview to Finch and back to the yard. On the return trip up the line, technical issues were encountered with lead car 5788 at Eglinton West, which forced the train to go out of service and deadhead back to the yard. The subway cars that didn't go to EKO Rail, and weren't sold off for movie use, were either scrapped by Future Enterprises (until they closed), or Westbrook Metals (later retirees).
