Richmond Hill GO Station is a GO Transit train station located in Richmond Hill, ON. It is on the northwest corner of Major Mackenzie Dr. and Newkirk Rd.
The station platform is on the east side of the tracks, heading north from Major Mackenzie Dr. The station building is located at the south end of the platform, while the bus loop is on the north end. The parking lot takes up the remaining area east to Newkirk Rd. Tickets are available during AM rush hour at the station building, otherwise a Ticket Vending Machine is available.
History
Richmond Hill GO Station opened on May 1, 1978 along with the rest of the Richmond Hill Line. No major changes have occurred to this station since its opening.
Richmond Hill employs an unusual process for trains during the AM rush. Since there is no storage on the line, two train sets are coupled together and driven up the line. They uncouple on the siding that contains the platform for the station, and proceed down in service separately. This is because only some portions of the line are double tracked, and trains departing later would be unable to pass the service trains. This scenario is avoided during afternoon rush because the trains are spaced further apart.
Currently, Richmond Hill is the terminus to the Richmond Hill Line. The line is currently planned to be extended north into Whitchurch-Stouffville, having stations at Gormley (Stouffville Sdrd.) and Bloomington Sdrd., as well as a layover facility near Bethesda Rd. Expansion plans to Richmond Hill GO Station include extending the platform south across the bridge over Major Mackenzie Dr. in order to extend the platform to a 12 car length, as well as providing a connection to the south side of Major Mackenzie.
