The Motor Coach Industries MC-9 was one of MCI's most popular motorcoaches, with 6,425 buses were produced. It featured a flat roofline and large rectangular side windows.

A special version was made for Greyhound Canada called the MC-9 Special. Its main distinguishing feature is the square headlights instead of the circular ones on the regular MC-9 and later MCI badge. New Jersey Transit placed a large order for a commuter version of the MC-9 called the MC-9A and MC-9B. They featured a destination sign window above the windshield and a two-piece front door. The MC-9B's destination sign was larger than that of the MC-9A.

TMC also produced a number of MC-9 coaches, 3,194 in total.
