The Cummins ISL is an 8.9 litre, inline six cylinder diesel engine. The ISL was designed to bridge a gap in Cummins' line of engines that the discontinuation of L10 had left, however it is not a direct descendent of the L10 and has more in common with the ISC.
The EPA 2004 compliant ISL was introduced in October 2002 and met the limits of 2.5 g/hp-hr of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHC) and 0.1 g/hp-hr of particulate matter. Cummins updated the ISL with High-Pressure Common-Rail (HPCR) system A variable geometry turbocharger was included to improve the performance of the engine.
The EPA 2007 standards set a limit of 0.01 g/hp-hr of particulate matter. The EPA 2007 compliant ISL features a particulate filter and a crankcase coalescing filter which controlled crankcase emissions. During the phase-in period between 2007 and 2009, Cummins produced 50% of their engines to meet EPA 2010 regulations. The EPA set 2010 NOx emission at 0.2 gr/hp-hr.Cummins employed selective catalytic reduction (SCR), which was already used in Europe to meet the Euro 4 standards, to reduce NOx levels. Cummins announced on January 8, 2010 that the ISL9, as it is now know, received EPA 2010 certification.
