Cummins ISC
The Cummins ISC is a straight-6 diesel engine with 8.3 liters in displacement. The ISC was launched in late 1997 and went into production in March 1998. It was built off its predecessor, the Cummins C8.3 engine using the Interact System, which combined advanced electronic engine controls, high-pressure fuel injection and heavy-duty components. It improved power, fuel economy, reliability and durability.
The Cummins ISC also has a sister engine which is designed off the existing 8.3 liter block which runs on compressed natural gas. This is the Cummins C8.3G which lated became the Cummins Westport C Gas Plus.
Cummins began producing the EPA 2004 compliant ISC which met the 0.25 g/hp-hr of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and nonmethane hydrocarbon (NMHCs) and 0.1 g/hp-hr of particulate matter standard. In 2003, Cummins revised the engine to use a High-Pressure Common-Rail (HPCR) system replacing the CAPS injection pump [1] to help better meet EPA 2004 emissions and also a variable geometry turbocharger system to help with the performance on this engine.
To meet EPA 2007 regulations of 0.01 g/hp-hr of particulate matter, an active particulate filter was made standard. To further reduce NOx emmissions to 0.2 g/hp-hr to meet EPA 2010, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) will be used. The 2010 engine is known as the ISC8.3. EPA 2010 certification for the ISC8.3 was awarded on January 8, 2010.
The ISC is expected to be discontinued in North America when EPA 2013 requirements come into effect, and will be replaced by the EPA 2013 ISL9.
