98 Burrard Station/Richmond Centre B-Line TransLink Accessible bullet-b.png was a bus route operated by Coast Mountain Bus Company in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Route Details

This was a north-south express route connecting Richmond Centre and Downtown Vancouver via Vancouver International Airport and key transit connections such as the Expo and Millennium lines and the 99 B-Line. Service ran daily every 5–7 minutes on weekdays and every 7–12 minutes on weekends/holidays. Service ran as a circular service beginning from Richmond Centre as 98 Burrard Station B-Line to Seymour Street & Davie Street, where it returned to Richmond Centre via Waterfront and Burrard stations as 98 Richmond Centre B-Line.

Trips departed from its Brighouse terminus at Anderson Road & No. 3 Road heading east on Anderson Road, south on Buswell Street, west on Granville Avenue, north on No. 3 Road, and west on Bridgeport Road taking the Cessna Drive exit to Airport Station. Continuing from Airport Station, trips went north on Russ Baker Way merging onto Grant McConachie Way and across the Arthur Laing Bridge, taking the SW Marine Drive exit and continued west becoming Granville Street heading north and across the Granville Street Bridge, taking the Seymour Street exit and continued on Seymour Street heading north, west on W. Cordova Street, and south on Burrard Street to Burrard Station. Continuing from Burrard Station, trips continued south on Burrard Street, east on Nelson Street, south on Howe Street, merging onto Granville Street and crossing the Granville Street Bridge, then becoming SW Marine Drive heading east and across the Arthur Laing Bridge heading south, taking the Russ Baker Way exit heading south on Russ Baker Way, and east on Miller Road to Airport Station. Continuing from Airport Station, trips went east on the bus access lane to Sea Island Way heading east, south on No. 3 Road, and east on Anderson Road to Anderson Road & No. 3 Road.

Some trips terminated at Steveston Highway & Shell Road, adjacent to Richmond Transit Centre, running as 98 To Steveston & Shell. These trips continued south on No. 3 Road bypassing the Brighouse terminus and east on Steveston Highway to Steveston Highway & Shell Road, servicing all local stops. Some trips starting their runs started from Steveston Highway & Shell Road as a regular 98 Burrard Station B-Line, also servicing all local stops and went west on Steveston Highway and north on No. 3 Road.

Points of Interest

History

Since the late-1980s and early-1990s, rapid transit was envisioned to connect Vancouver and Richmond. This was to be in the form of a rapid bus or light rail network. In 1994, BC Transit proposed a "Rapidbus" concept and was reintroduced to Vancouver City Council in 1997, but this time as a premium service at regular fares and it was decided in 1998 that the best route for the express service would run on Granville Street in Vancouver.[1]

The first phase began service on September 4, 2000, running between a temporary Airport Station and Burrard Station as a trial before full service was to be introduced for December 2000.[2] Full service was introduced in August 2001. Originally, full service was to start in April but was deferred due to the transit strike. The full commissioning of the 98 B-Line resulted in the discontinuation of peak-hour extensions of local Richmond routes to Downtown Vancouver.

The total cost of the project was approximately $52 million.[3] This cost included the construction of Richmond Transit Centre, the purchasing of buses, construction of the No. 3 Road Busway and other transit priority measures and amenities.

Due to the construction of the Canada Line and the required narrowing of No. 3 Road, the Busway was closed on February 6, 2006.

During Canada Line construction, a series of reroutes occurred on the 98 B-Line. The first, starting in 2007, had it turning off of No. 3 Road onto Cook Road, Cooney Road, Lansdowne Road, until continuing with its regular route. This continued until late 2009, when the 98 B-Line began to divert following its original reroute to Lansdowne Road, turning eastbound instead of westbound, continuing northbound on Garden City Road, then westbound onto Bridgeport Road/Sea Island Way (depending on direction).

Ameneties

To date, the 98 B-Line remains the only route in the network to have had extensive transit priority measures. The 98 B-Line also had extensive custom branding and at the time, unique passenger amenities. Its most visible custom amenities were its bus stop shelters, which were large and brightly lit with a next bus departure LED board. The departure boards provided information on the predicted arrival times of the next two 98 B-Line buses, as well as delays. They were designed to a higher standard with brand identity and tactile edges.

Each bus on the 98 B-Line – specifically ones that were originally assigned to the route – were all low-floor New Flyer D60LF units with audible and digital onboard next stop annunciation, which was a first in the fleet. All seats were padded cloth and buses were painted in the B-Line livery. Each bus was also fitted with GPS-based technology to provide real-time tracking with dispatch and was also fitted with GPS modules that communicated with traffic lights to allow for priority by shortening red lights or extending green lights.

The No. 3 Road Busway, which was the only protected bus priority lane ever constructed along an arterial roadway in the Lower Mainland until the completion of the protected bus lane on Scott Road near 72 Avenue for the R6 Scott Road RapidBus in 2024, allowed for buses to run in a protected environment through 2.5 kilometres of Richmond Centre with signal priority through intersections. Stations were located along the Busway and the entire length of it was landscaped.
