159 Coquitlam Central Station/Braid Station TransLink Accessible bullet-b.png is a bus route operated by Coast Mountain Bus Company in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Route Details

This is an east-west route connecting Coquitlam Central Station and Braid Station in New Westminster. Service runs daily every 30 minutes, improving to every 15 minutes during peak hours. Evening service and service all day Sunday/holiday run every hour.

Eastbound trips depart Braid Station via bus access road, north on Brunette Avenue, east on Lougheed Highway, south on King Edward Street, east on United Boulevard, south on Brigantine Drive, east on Hartley Avenue, north on Schooner Street, east on United Boulevard, west on Shuswap Avenue, south on N. Bend Street, west on Canoe Avenue, north on Golden Drive, south on United Boulevard, east on the Mary Hill Bypass, north on Shaughnessy Street, east on Citadel Street, north on Pitt River Road, north on Mary Hill Road, west on Wilson Avenue, north on Shaughnessy Street, and west on Lougheed Highway to Coquitlam Central Station.

Westbound trips depart Coquitlam Central Station via bus access road and east on Barnet Highway becoming Lougheed Highway, south on Shaughnessy Street, east on Wilson Avenue, south on Mary Hill Road, east on Pitt River Road, west on Citadel Drive, south on Shaughnessy Street, west on the Mary Hill Bypass, north on United Boulevard, west on Shuswap Avenue, south on N. Bend Street, west on Canoe Avenue, north on Golden Drive, south on United Boulevard, south on Schooner Street, west on Hartley Avenue, north on Brigantine Drive, west on United Boulevard, north on King Edward Street, west on Lougheed Highway, south on Brunette Avenue, and bus access road to Braid Station.

During peak hours, AM trips towards Coquitlam Central Station and PM trips towards Braid Station go via Port Coquitlam Station. From Wilson Avenue & Mary Hill Road, trips head east on Wilson Avenue into Port Coquitlam Station, then west on Wilson Avenue and then regular route.

The first eastbound trip on weekdays begins service from Shaughnessy at Citadel Drive instead of from Braid Station.

On weekdays when school is in session, an eastbound trip in the morning routes goes via Riverside Secondary School via regular route until Wilson Avenue & Shaughnessy Street, where trips continue west along Wilson, south on Reeve Street, east on Pitt River Road, north on Shaughnessy Street, and then regular route to Coquitlam Central Station. In the afternoon, a school special trip begins at Riverside Secondary and heads south on Reeve Street, east on Pitt River Road and continues the regular westbound routing until Citadel Drive & Capital Court where it terminates.

History

  • May 1986 - Service introduced as 159 Lougheed Mall/New Westminster Station, an express route connecting Lougheed Mall and New Westminster Station during Expo 86 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.[1]
  • October 1986 - Service discontinued following the end of Expo 86[2]
  • September 1991 - Service reintroduced as 159 Port Coquitlam Centre/New Westminster Station with trips via Meridian Industrial during peak hours[3][4]
  • May 1992 - Service revised to go via Mary Hill Road, Citadel Drive, and Pitt River Road following completion of Citadel Drive extension to Mary Hill Road; service along Mary Hill Bypass between Mary Hill Road and Pitt River Road discontinued and introduction of additional trips via Meridian Industrial[5]
  • September 1992 - Stopping procedures revised to include for pick up and drop off between Columbia and New Westminster stations[6]
  • February 1996 - PM peak hour trips extended from Port Coquitlam Station to Port Coquitlam Centre[7]
  • September 1996 - One trip from New Westminster Station rerouted via Broadway Street in Port Coquitlam and one weekday trip from New Westminster Station in the morning and Port Coquitlam Station in the afternoon routed via Reeve Street to service Riverside School[8]
  • September 1997 - Peak hour service through Citadel Heights introduced[9]
  • November 1999 - Route became bike rack equipped and wheelchair accessible[10]
  • January 2002 - Terminus relocated to Braid Station with the opening of the Millennium Line and evening and weekend services introduced[11]
  • September 2013 - Service optimization eliminates service along Lougheed Highway to cover service along United Boulevard via Fraser Mills following cancellation of the 177 Coquitlam Station/Braid Station[12]
  • December 2016 - All trips re-routed via Pitt River Road; service to Meridian Industrial Park taken over by the 175 Meridian/Coquitlam Central Station service [13]
  • September 2017 - Route extended to Coquitlam Central Station
  • September 2018 - Route revised to serve Port Coquitlam Station during peak hours to better connect with the West Coast Express[14]
  • January 2021 - PM school special starting at Riverside Secondary School revised to run with RapidBus XDE60 units that continued as an R3 Lougheed Highway
  • April 2021 - PM school special starting at Riverside Secondary reverted to run with 40-foot buses
  • September 13, 2021–May 15, 2023 - Service in both directions revised to continue on United Boulevard and bypass Brigantine Drive, Hartley Avenue, and Schooner Street due to Trans Mountain pipeline construction-related closures
