The station platform is located on the west side of the tracks, while the station building is located at the south end of the platform. The parking lot extends from the platform out towards Yonge St. Buses enter at the north end of the parking lot, and circle around to the bus bays, north of the station building and parallel to the station platform.
History
Rail service towards Barrie had existed for many years. VIA service operated to Barrie along the same route as today's GO service but when GO originally took over operation of the line in 1982, they cut the line back to Bradford; Barrie was left with bus service connecting to Newmarket.
In the early 2000s, GO sought to re-extend train service into Barrie. The first stage was a new station at the southern edge of Barrie, coupled with a new layover yard nearby. Barrie South GO Station opened in 2007, bringing GO train service into the city of Barrie for the first time. Barrie South was the terminus until January 30, 2012, when Allandale Waterfront opened, next to the historic Allandale station near the waterfront.
Connecting buses
An off-street bus loop is present at Barrie South.
