  • January 1, 2010: All new diesel vehicles in North America (excluding some ordered in 2009) must meet the United States' Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2010 emission levels of 0.2 g/hp-hr of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx). Almost all engine manufactures choose to use selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to meet the new emission levels. International is the only manufacturer to use advanced exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) only.
  • January 3, 2010: Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) fare increase.
  • January 4, 2010: Coast Mountain Bus Company (CMBC) introduces an in-house plastic driver shield it will test to try to better protect bus operators from assaults.
  • January 5, 2010: Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (MTA) Long Island Rail Road opens the new Atlantic Terminal Pavilion.
  • January 8, 2010: Fused Logic Labs launches the Route 411 smartphone transit application.

    • Daimler Buses North America announces it received an order from the University of Georgia’s (UGA) Campus Transit System for four 40 foot Orion VII NG diesel transit buses for delivery in the fall.
    • Nova Bus announces that Connecticut Transit has ordered 35 LFS Artics, with options for an additional 35 articulated vehicles over a four-year period. They will be a mix of diesel and diesel-electric hybrid drives for its articulated vehicles, with deliveries starting in late 2010. The order, valued at approximately $60 million, will be assembled at Nova Bus' Plattsburgh facility.
  • Januaray 15, 2010: Daimler Buses North America (DBNA) announces it has received orders totaling 92 for their VII NG model from three transit agencies in New York. Suffolk County Transit has placed an order for 81 diesel Orion VII NGs (15 40-foot buses, 50 35-foot buses and 16 30-foot buses). Ulster County Area Transit (UCAT) has placed an order for three 35 foot Orion VII NG HEVs. Dutchess County LOOP Bus System ordered four 40 foot diesel Orion VII NGs. Deliveries are will commence late summer and fall.

  • January 21, 2010: The first MTA Nova Bus LFS Artic, 1200, goes into service on the Bx12.
  • January 22, 2010: Société de transport de Montréal (STM) issues a call for tenders for the manufacture of their new MR-08 Métro stock.
  • January 27, 2010: Edmonton Transit System (ETS) celebrates a 100% accessible fleet with a milestone event at City Hall.
  • January 28, 1010: Olympic Line in Vancouver is launched with Bombardier Flexity streetcars from Société des Transports Intercommunaux de Bruxelles (STIB) of Brussels.

  • February 1, 2010: The first-ever moving 3D advertisement to appear in the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) system debuted at the Grand Central-42nd Street Subway Station.
  • February 2, 2010: Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) releases the beta version of its internet trip planner.
  • February 5, 2010: Bombardier announces it won a $34 million three-year contract with the Agence metropolitaine de transport (AMT) to provide locomotive and passenger rail car maintenance services for rolling stock for the Dorion-Rigaud, Blainville-St-Jerome and Delson-Candiac. The work will begin July 1, 2010.
  • February 8, 2010: Motor Coach Industries (MCI) announces the MCI in Motion 2010 tour. MCI wil bring to its customers training, demonstration, and information seminars showcasing the latest from MCI.
  • February 10, 2010: Winnipeg Transit launches BUStxt, which allows customers to receive on their mobile phones bus information such as stops nearest them, bus departure times at stops, and when the bus they are on will reach a location further along the route.
  • February 11, 2010: Amtrak, Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI), California's transportation agencies, and major freight railroad companies launched the "Common Sense" rail safety campaign to help reduce the number of pedestrians killed and injured when trespassing around tracks and equipment.
  • February 23, 2010: United Motorcoach Association (UMA) 2010 Expo Day 1 in Las Vegas, Nevanda. The day consists of registration, State Association Summit, and welcome reception.
  • February 24, 2010: UMA 2010 Expo Day 2 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Various information sessions take place throughout the day concluding with an exhibition hall sneak preview.
  • February 25, 2010:
    • UMA 2010 Expo Day 3 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Solution sessions take place throughout the day, the exhibition hall opens in the afternoon, and the 7th Annual Vison Awards Banquet takes place at night.
    • Daimler Buses North America formally introduces the option for the Mercedes-Benz OM 471 diesel engine for the Setra S 417 motorcoach in North America.
    • Wright Group is honoured as “most innovative company” at Aer Lingus Viscount Awards.
  • February 26, 2010: UMA 2010 Expo Day 4 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Exhibition hall is open for the afternoon.
  • February 27, 2010: UMA 2010 Expo Day 5 in Las vegas, Nevada. Annual Ray Dupuis Memorial Golf Tournament takes place.

  • March 1, 2010: Amtrak introduces Wi-Fi service, AmtrakConnect, on all Acela Express trains, in six major stations along the Northeast Corridor, and in all four ClubAcela lounges.
  • March 2, 2010: Ballard Power Systems annonces they have entered into contracts for the supply of fuel cell power modules to power one New Flyer H40LFR and one ElDorado National transit bus for SunLine Transit Agency in Thousand Oaks, CA.
  • March 3, 2010: York Region Transit awards the five-year Southwest Division Bus Operations and Maintenance contract, located at 8300 Keele Street, to Veolia Transportation.
  • March 5, 2010: Optare announces the delivery of new a Solo SE to Hatch Green Coaches of Hatch Beauchamp, Somerset. The 7.8 metre bus is powered by a Mercedes-Benz OM904LA engine to an Allison 1000 with a KLAM KA-75 retarder.
  • March 6, 2010: Toronto Transportation Commission (TTC) 6734, a 1991 Orion V, and 6223, a 1987 GM Classic are chartered.
  • March 10, 2010:Daimler Buses North America and officials from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) New York City Transit were on in Oriskany, NY to celebrate the completion of an order of 1,350 Orion VII diesel-electric hybrid transit buses.
  • March 11, 2010:
    • Nova Bus announces an order for 24 LFS by TheBus of Honolulu. The order is valued a $10 million and will be assembled in Nova Bus’ Plattsburgh facility. Delivery is expected in late 2010.
    • SunLine Transit Agency unveils it's "6th Generation Hydrogen Bus", a New Flyer H40LFR.
  • March 12, 2010: Optare announces the delivery of six tri-axle, 12.35 metre Volvo B9TL/Visionaire buses to Big Bus Tours London. The buses are powered by a 320 hp Volvo D9B engine to a 6-speed ZF Ecolife transmission.
  • March 15, 2010:
    • New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (NORTA) announces they received $45 million from the US Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) to expand the historic New Orleans streetcars through the city’s central business district, along Loyola Avenue.
    • Wabtec Corp announcees the acquisition of signal engineering and design services provider Xorail LLC for $40 million in cash.
    • Angels Flight, a funicular, reopens after receiving approval from the California Public Utilities Commission. It was closed in 2001 after a deadly accident left one man dead and seven others injured.
  • March 17, 2010:
    • Connecticut Transit takes delivery of the first of their fleet of New Flyer D35LFR buses.
    • Motor Coach Industries (MCI) announces Francis Custom Tours takes delivery of a E4500 coach with leather and upholstery Amaya-Astron seating, 110-volt power outlets, burlwood laminated parcel racks and entry-trim, flush lavatory, Blaupunkt 10.4" monitors, a cordless microphone, and a backup camera for the driver.
    • MCI announces Flagship Trailways has taken delivery of a D4505 coach with WiFi and electrical 110 volt outlets at every seat.
    • Wrightbus announces the delivery of 14 new Volvo B9TL/Wrightbus Eclipse Gemini 2 buses to Lothian Buses for use on the Airlink service. The 11.4 metre long buses are Euro 5 Incentive-compliant witha 310 Volvo D9B engine to a Voith transmission, and are highly specified with Lazzarini Practico seats in E-leather, LED interior lighting, wood-effect flooring, 240V electrical sockets, tables, and luggage racks.
  • March 18, 2010: Wrightbus announces Translink Ulsterbus has signed a contract for 48 Scania/Solar Rural buses funded by the Department for Regional Development. Delivery is schedualled to comence in April, with the first units destined for use in towns across Northern Ireland.
  • March 20, 2010: West Vancouver Municipal Transit 926, a 1992 Orion I, is chartered.
  • March 21, 2010: Last day of service on the Olympic Line in Vancouver.
  • March 22, 2010:
    • Capital MetroRail service in Austin, Texas is launched.
    • Optare announces the order of eight Versa buses by Webberbus of Somerset for the Taunton Flyer Park & Ride contract. Delivery of the buses is set for September 2010.
  • March 23, 2010:
    • IC Bus and Thor Industries announce a new supply agreement that will make IC Bus the exclusive provider of cut-away chassis to Thor. Therefore Champion Bus, ElDorado National, General Coach of America and Goshen Coach vehicles will be built exclusively on IC Bus's new TC Series chassis.
    • Optare announces Sargeants Brothers of Kington have put an Solo and a Tempo into service on their cross border route between Hereford, Kington and Llandrindod Wells bought through Optare Direct. The 9.5 metre Solo is powered by a Euro 5, 154 hp Mercedes-Benz OM904LA engine to an Allison 2100 transmission and has 29 fixed Rescroft Defender III seats. The 12 metre Tempo is powered by a Mercedes-Benz 282 hp OM906LA engine to an Allison T310R transmission and has 43 on Esteban Civic VO seats.
  • March 24, 2010:
  • March 25, 2010: The Government of Ontario announces the cancelation of the $174 million bus replacement program for municipalities as part of a plan to balance the budget.
  • March 26, 2010: ISE Corporation announces that it received 2010 certification for its gasoline-electric hybrid system from the California Air Resources Board (CARB). This is the first engine certification issued in 2010 by CARB for the Hybrid Urban Bus category.
  • March 29, 2010:
    • Moscow Metro is bombed by two suicide bombers during the morning rush hour. One bombing took place at Lubyanka station and another at Park Kultury station.
    • ISE Corporation announces the State of Minnesota Department of Transportation (MN-DOT) approved two ISE bus manufacturer partners (New Flyer and ElDorado) to supply their chassis together with ISE's gasoline hybrid-electric drive system as a qualified option under the terms of the recently released contract. This deal allows any US Transit Agency to buy off this contract that allows for up to 1000 bus purchases without having to go through their own request for proposals (RFP) process.
  • March 30, 2010: Fred Battle Jr. is honored as Greyhound USA's first Exceptionally Safe Drivers for his 31 years of driving without an accident or incident.
  • March 31, 2010:
    • American Seating announces that its InSight received the 2010 International Forum (iF) product design award, and while its Vision received the 2009 Good Design award in the Transportation category.
    • Motor Coach Industries (MCI) announces its new Super-60 limited warranty for the J4500 coach. The new plan extends coverage on many components to five years and expands coverage on several components that carry warranty terms shorter than the applicable base limited warranty. The warranty applies only to contracts for the future delivery of new 2010 and later model J4500 coaches both quoted and signed on or after February 23, 2010.
    • MCI announces it has won a contract for 70 D4505 coaches for Greyhound USA with an option for 30 more coaches.
    • Clayton County Transit (C-TRAN) ceases operations as of 23:59. The Clayton County Board of Commissioners, which owns C-TRAN, voted last year to eliminate the transit system.

  • April 1, 2010:
    • Optare announces the first buses fitted with Optare’s Eco Drive Integrated Electrical Systems are now being delivered. Norfolk Green is the first UK operator to have specified the complete telematics package, including a fully-integrated Actia CCTV system, in recently delivered Solo and Versas buses.
    • TheBus of Honolulu dedicates and bless the first of 20 2010 New Flyer DE60LFR buses.
  • April 5, 2010:
  • April 6, 2010: Optare announces the delivery of ten 12 metre Scania N270UD4x2/Optare OmniDekka buses to Nottingham City Transport. These buses feature a 270 hp Scanis DC9 diesel engine to a six speed automatic transmission, Fainsa passenger seats, INIT real-time information system with 17 inch monitors, tinted green windows, air-conditioning driver's area, Actia CCTV system, and Mobitec LED destination sign. The buses will be used on the GO2 service.
  • April 8, 2010: MCI announces the delivery of a 2010 J4500 to Regent Coach Line of San Antonio. The bus features a Cummins ISM engine with an Allison B500 transmission, electronic stability control, wide-ride suspension with Koni FSD shocks, and a reverse sensing system.
  • April 10, 2010: Toronto Transportation Society (TTS) Spring Charter. A Parkinson Coach Lines highway coach is chartered for a northern trip to Barrie and Orillia.
  • April 13, 2010:
    • It is announced Affiliated Computer Services (ACS) was selected by the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) to provide Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The telematics package includes constant wireless communications between dispatchers and the bus, incident management features, CCTV camera, next-stop announcements, passenger counting, location determination, traffic signal prioritization, and transit information delivered to electronic signs at MATA’s transit center and along the trolley routes.
    • Megabus announces that they will be expanding service. Service in the Northeast will be expanded to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and State College, Pennsylvania. Service in the Midwest will be expanded to Des Moines, Iowa and Iowa City, Iowa.
    • TriMet announces they have selected three contractors (Flatiron Construction Corp. of Lafayette, Colorado; Kiewit Pacific Co. of Vancouver, Washington; and PCL/Traylor joint venture of Bellevue, Washington) to compete for a contract to build the estimated $135 million Willamette River transit bridge. The bridge will carry buses and MAX trains on the proposed Portland-to-Milwaukie line.
  • April 14, 2010:
    • Nashville Metropolitan Transit Authority launches RouteShout, a mobile phone application that gives customers next bus arrival times.
    • New Jersey Transit approves changes to fare and service to help ease the $300 million budget gap. Fares for one-zone local bus, light rail and Access Link services will be adjusted from $1.35 to $1.50. Commuter rail and interstate bus tickets will increase 25 percent, and off-peak rail roundtrip discounts — purchased by less than 20 percent of rail customers — will not be sold after April 30. They will no longer be accepted after May 23.
    • Verint Systems announces that the Metropolitan Council in Minneapolis/St. Paul has selected their Nextiva video security system for buses in the Twin Cities Metro Area.
  • April 15, 2010:
    • Motor Coach Industries (MCI) announces the delivery of four 2010 D4500CT coaches to the City of Valparaiso for its daily ChicaGoDASH service from Valparaiso, Indiana to Chicago's Loop. The coaches seat 53 passengers, wireless internet, 110-volt outlets, an LCD satellite television monitor system, a wheelchair lift, and bike rack. ** Setra announces the delivery of two S 417 coaches to AT&T Charter Service Inc. of Louisburg, North Carolina. The coaches feature Setra’s Ambiente seats, wireless internet, also five 19-inch monitors to with satellite television.
  • April 16, 2010:
    • Daimler Buses North America announces they received the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001:2004 Environmental Management System certification for its Mississauga, Ontario production facility. This is the first of the Daimler bus production facilities in North America to become certified.
    • Optare delivers the 4000th Solo. It is for Trentbarton.
    • Federal Transit Administration announces that TriMet of Portland, Oregon will receive $2.4 million in federal research funds to support the development of streetcar components that will be made in the United States. TriMet will use the funds to support the development of a domestically-produced streetcar propulsion system, as well as initial work to develop a streetcar that can operate for short distances without power from overhead wires. The FTA will fund 80 percent of the $3-million project, with a local match of $600,000. The work will be done by the Oregon Iron Works of Clackamas, Oregon, the parent company of United Streetcar LLC.
  • April 17, 2010: Niagara Falls Transit 8835, a 1998 Motor Coach Industries Classic is chartered.

    • Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) launches their fleet of 25 2010 New Flyer DE60LFR buses.
    • Ontario Transportation Expo takes place at the International Centre in Toronto.
    • DesignLine announces the delivery of two Eco-Smart I all-electric buses to the Tourism Development & Investment Company (“TDIC”) for use on the Sir Bani Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
    • MCI announces the delivery of two 2010 D4505 coaches to Post Road Stages/Collins Bus Service of South Windsor, Connecticut. The coaches feature a Cummins ISM 410 hp engine, an Allison B500 6 speed transmission, a Blaupunkt audio/visual system, and one is equipped with a wheelchair lift.
    • MCI announces the delivery of two 2010 E4500 coaches to Calco Travel. The coaches feature a Cummins ISM 410 hp engine, an Allison B500 6 speed automatic transmission, 50 leather upholstered seats that allow for extra legroom, three-point seatbelts, tray tables and a seatback entertainment center that features individual 110-volt outlets, Wi-Fi, iPod dock, color monitor, and satellite access to Direct TV and XM radio by headset.
  • April 21, 2010:
    • Brampton Transit public unveils the first of their fleet of New Flyer XDE40 buses for their Züm service.
    • Bombardier announces they have signed an agreement with Koleje Mazowieckie - KM Sp. z o.o. for the delivery of 11 TRAXX electric locomotives valued at approximately $54 million. Delivery is scheduled for summer 2011. The agreement also includes provisions regarding maintenance to be rendered for four years from the date of locomotive delivery, as well as for the training of Koleje Mazowieckie employees.
    • Daimler VansUSA launches the Sprinter Shuttle van, a low floor paratransit vehicle.
  • April 22, 2010:
    • Texas Transit Association (TTA) names Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) the 2010 Outstanding Metropolitan Transit Authority.
    • New Flyer is named one of Canada's Greenest Employers for 2010.
  • April 24, 2010: Edmonton Transit System (ETS) celebrates the opening of Southgate and Century Park LRT stations.
  • April 27, 2010: It is announced Bombardier's EBI Cab 2000 automatic train protection (ATP) system is approved for commercial operation on the high-speed Spanish AVE S-130 trains in Europe.
  • April 28, 2010: Ottawa City Council approves the purchases of 226 New Flyer D60LFRs for OC Transpo for a 19% discount, 80 New Flyer D40LFRs for a 10% discount, and the replacement of 226 New Flyer D60LFs.
  • April 29, 2010:
    • Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MVTA) launches RouteShout, a mobile phone application. Users can find bus stops, routes and arrival and departure times. If the user has a GPS-enabled phone, it will display nearby stops, otherwise a simple search by location can be made. Riders can browse by location or search for stops by street name to see when the next bus will arrive. In addition, frequently used stops may be saved as favorites for quick access later.
    • Setra announces the delivery of a 2010 S 417 coach to Cross Tours of Harrisonburg, Virginia. The coach is equipped with Ambiente passenger seats with auto-retracting footrests, five 19" monitors, and a Blaupunkt CD/DVD player.
    • A cable catches fire in the subway tunnel on the Red Line north of the Downtown Crossing station in Boston, Massachusetts.
  • April 30, 2010:
    • Utah Transit Authority launches Flex Routes which run a regularly scheduled route through the community, but also have the ability to deviate up to 3/4 mile off of the regular fixed route for just $1 more than standard fare.
    • MCI announces the delivery of a 2010 D4505 coach to David Tours of New Orleans, Louisiana. The coach features a Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine to a ZF AS Tronic tranmission.
    • New Flyer announces they, through a wholly owned subsidiary, has acquired the assets and business of TCB Industries.
    • Setra announces the delivery of two S 416 coaches to Gotta Go Trailways of Greensboro, North Carolina.

  • May 2, 2010:

    • APTA Bus & Paratransit Conference Day 2 in Cleveland, Ohio.
    • Metrolink unveils crash-absorbing rail cars built by Hyundai-Rotem Company.
    • Utah Transit Authority launches Flex Routes which run a regularly scheduled route through the community, but also have the ability to deviate up to 3/4 mile off of the regular fixed route for just $1 more than standard fare.
    • It is announced Clean Energy Fuels Corp. has contracted with SuperShuttle International, a shared-ride ground transportation operator, to provide compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling services to SuperShuttle vans operating at major U.S. airports nationwide.
    • Motor Coach Industries (MCI) announces the delivery of two J4500 coaches to Groupe Hélie of Becancour, Québec.

    • APTA Bus & Paratransit Conference Day 3 in Cleveland, Ohio.
    • Orange County Transportation Authority's (OCTA) Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC) receives the 2010 Compass Blueprint Recognition Award for Sustained Leadership.
  • May 5, 2010:
    • APTA Bus & Paratransit Conference Day 4 in Cleveland, Ohio.
    • Groudbreaking takes place on the Haverhill Commuter Rail Project in Massachusetts.
  • May 6, 2010:
    • BostonCoach selected the Survey on the Spot mobile application as a platform to gather client feedback.
    • Apollo Video Technology wins New Flyer's Silver Award for delivery performance in the 2009 calendar year with 97 percent on-time performance level.
  • May 7, 2010:
    • Last day of service on York Region Transit's (YRT) contracted route with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) 25D. It is replaced with YRT's route 90B.
    • Las Vegas Railway Express Inc. ("X" Train), a Delaware company, announces it executed an agreement with Transportation Management Services to acquire its first set of passenger railcars for its "X Train" project.
    • Illinois Senate votes 59-0 to create the Illinois and Midwest High Speed Rail Commission with the intent of issuing a roadmap for the creation of bullet train lines in Illinois and neighboring states.
  • May 10, 2010:
    • First Transit announces it was awarded a five-year management contract for Reno's Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) paratransit services. First Transit will begin management of the $30.4 million contract on July 1.
    • Cubic announces it signed a contract with the Public Transport Ticketing Corp. (PTTC) to provide greater Sydney’s electronic ticketing system.
  • May 11, 2010:
    • It is announced that the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) exercised options for an additional 31 six-car trainsets of Toronto Rocket subway cars valued at approximately $398.5 million.
    • It is announced that Stockholm Public Transport has placed a $129.5 million order with Alstom Transport for 12 new Coradia Nordic suburban trains. The electric multiple units will be used on the Stockholm-Uppsala Line.
  • May 13, 2010:
    • New Jersey Transit announces the launch of a new Developer Resources section of njtransit.com to provide third-party developers with direct access to service data for use in creating new trip planning software applications.
    • ISE Corporation announces they will begin accepting orders for its next-generation, battery-dominant CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) Hybrid System for transit buses with production units expected to be available in 2011.
    • Setra announces the delivery of three S 417 coaches to the Canadian Navy. The three Naval Display Buses will be used as mobile recruiting coaches, and have been designed to support the Navy’s recruiting efforts.
    • Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announces the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma received the 1,000th grant for transit awarded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Thee $480,374 grant will be used for vehicle and technology upgrades.
  • May 17, 2010:
    • Transport for London (TfL) unveils the final design of the new Routemaster hybrid double-decker bus meant to continue the AEC Routemaster's legacy.
    • TriMet of Portland, Oregon breaks ground on the new Civic Drive light rail station.

    • Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard announced a potential short-term solution to halt fare increases and service reductions that could otherwise result from a projected budget shortfall at IndyGo. The proposed solution leverages existing dollars from a number of sources, including IndyGo's existing general operating balance, the rebalancing of IndyGo's revenues in 2011 between operating and capital, the use of a $5 million line of credit and other IndyGo reserves.
    • Rock Hill announces their Ride-To-Work program which uses three buses that will run at peak travel times weekday mornings and afternoons, ferrying city residents for $2.50 each way. Passengers must book rides 24 hours in advance. The service will start July 1, 2010.

    • Late May 2010: Alstom Transport delivered the first two renovated coaches of the Budapest Metro to the Metrorex workshop in Bucharest, Romania. Alstom will renovate a total of 15 of the oldest train sets in the Bucharest Metro fleet.
