Bay Area Rapid Transit or BART is a rapid transit, heavy rail system serving the San Francisco Bay Area. It links San Francisco with surrounding municipalities in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties.

1950s

  • July 25, 1951 - California Legislature creates special Rapid Transit commission to study Bay Area transportation problems.
  • June 4, 1957 - California Legislature approves creation of five-county Bay Area Rapid Transit District.
  • November 14, 1957 - District officially activated with first Directors meeting

1960s

  • April 12, 1964 - San Mateo County Supervisors officially withdraw the county from District, citing high property taxes and the existing Southern Pacific commuter line as reasons.
  • June 19, 1964 - President Lyndon B. Johnson presides over groundbreaking of Diablo Test Track.
  • January 24, 1966 - Construction starts on downtown Oakland subway.
  • July 25, 1967 - Construction starts on Market Street subway, San Francisco.
  • April 1969 - Last section of Transbay Tube placed

1970s

  • July 23, 1971 - Last rail laid outside Lafayette
  • September 11, 1972 - Operations begin from MacArthur to Fremont stations (Orange Line).
  • September 27, 1972 - President Richard M. Nixon rides BART from San Leandro station to Lake Merritt station.
  • October 2, 1972 - "Fremont Flyer" incident: Car 143 overruns end of track at Fremont station, landing in a parking lot.
  • October 11, 1972 - Dedication of BART system by Secretary of Transportation John A. Volpe at Lake Merritt Station.
  • January 29, 1973 - Orange line extended from MacArthur to Richmond.
  • May 21, 1973 - Opened Yellow line from Concord to 12th St.
  • August 11, 1973 - First train traverses Transbay Tube at 70 mph.
  • November 3, 1973 - Opened Montgomery St.-Daly City on Yellow line (shuttle)
  • June 16, 1974 - Yellow line thru route from Concord to Daly City (opened Transbay Tube)
  • September 16, 1974 - Began Green line Monday-Saturday daytime service from Fremont-Daly City.
  • January 1, 1976 - Began Service 6AM - Midnight, Monday-Friday
  • April 19, 1976 - Began Red line service Monday-Friday rush hour from Richmond-Daly City.
  • June 7, 1976 - Added Red line service Monday-Friday midday and Saturday daytime from Richmond-Daly City.
  • May 27, 1976 - Embarcadero Station opens (34th, and last original station)
  • July 2, 1978 - Start of regular Sunday 8 A.M. to midnight service.
  • January 17, 1979 - Train on fire in Transbay Tube, kills one firefighter and destroys 6 cars.

1990s

  • May 2, 1993 - Start of double header weekend service with skip stops
  • July 10, 1995 - Began Blue line Monday-Friday rush hour service from Concord-Bay Fair.
  • July 24, 1995 - Extended Blue service from Bay Fair to South Hayward
  • December 16, 1995 - Yellow line extended from Concord to Martinez and also with Blue line service during Monday-Friday rush hour.
  • February 24, 1996 - Yellow line extended from Daly City to Colma and also with Red line service during Monday-Friday rush hour.
  • December 7, 1996 - Yellow line extended from Martinez to Pittsburg also with Blue line service during Monday-Friday rush hour.
  • May 9, 1997 - Replaced Monday-Friday rush hour Blue line service from Pittsburg to South Hayward with a new route, Dublin to Daly City
  • January 14, 1999 - Unveiled the first of its completely renovated transit cars (B2 cars) at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 12th St

    • BART Holds acceptance of new cars
  • March 22, 2021
    • Saturday service reduced to 3 lines (cancelled red and green lines).
  • August 3, 2021
    • Service increased the 15 minute headways, all lines during weekday daytime. Yellow line runs on 15 minute headway on Saturdays.

  • 101, 102, 104, 106 were scrapped after the completion of the prototype program, and replaced by production cars of the same number.
  • 103,105 were written off in a collision at Coliseum on November 2, 1971.
  • Car 107 was rebuilt by Rohr post testing and entered service. Cab is preserved at Rio Vista. It was later rebuilt into an 800 series B car, then into an 1800 series B2 car.[1]

AirBART

AirBART was a shuttle bus service that operates between Oakland International Airport and Coliseum/Oakland Airport station. The wheelchair accessible buses served Terminal 1 and 2 and stops on San Leandro Boulevard at the BART station. AirBART was replaced by the BART Oakland Airport Connector (OAC) line on November 22, 2014.

BART Express

BART Express bus service was provided to Pittsburg/Antioch/Brentwood, Dublin/Pleasanton/Livermore/San Ramon, Martinez, and Hercules/Pinole areas from the 1970s to 1990s. It was contracted to AC Transit (1974?/1975-1989), and Laidlaw Transit Services, Inc. (1989-1997).

There is no relation with the current BART Early Bird Express service, which provides 4:00 AM bus service to select stations in leiu of 4:00 AM rail service.

  • Originally ordered for BART Express service.
  • Some units were repainted into the regular AC Transit Livery and used for other routes in the early 1980's upon the arrival of the 1000 series Flyers.
  • 8007 was replaced with a 2nd 8007.
  • 1 unit was retrofitted with a wheelchair lift circa 1981.[3]
  • 8008 was involved in a major accident, but was repaired.
  • 8014 & 8016 were destroyed accidents circa 1982.
  • Retired in 1984.
  • 8030 was involved in an accident and was retained post-1984 due to a legal hold. It was spotted in service in the late 1980's and was the last active unit.[4]
  • All units (excluding 8014, 8016 & 8030) were initially sold to Metro Apple Express in New York, NY & 1 other agency in 1984.
    • 3 units were spotted in Red Hook Brooklyn, NY in 2007. Their current statuses remain unknown.

  • Many units were bought by Transit Sales International.
    • Some units were later spotted in Tijuana, Mexico.
  • Some units were bought by Zacher's Auto Salvage in Harbor City, CA.
    • 1503 & 1520 was spotted in 2004. They remained until circa 2007 and were scrapped.
    • 1539 was spotted on 6/27/2006.[5]
